You can visit the town's imposing Roman castle with its marble keep called the Torre de Menagem, one of the tallest of its kind, as well as the extensive curtain walls which used to have as many as 40 towers. Around the Praça da República you can admire some fine Renaissance palaces and there is an interesting museum, the Museu da Rainha D. Leonor, which has a large collection of late Gothic, Renaissance and baroque paintings, azulejos and funerary monuments.

The Pousada de Beja is also a historic monument in itself, located in the 13th century Franciscan convent of São Francisco, which features a rectangular Gothic chapel with a polygonal apse.
