The Gothic Catholic Cathedral stands magnificently in the city of Orlèans. The seat of the Bishop of Orlèans was built from 1278 to 1329 and rebuilt from 1601 to 1829 after its partial destruction in the 16th century.

Most famously associated with Joan of Arc, who attended mass there just before she partook in the lift of the siege of Orlèans, the cathedral’s stained glass windows now depict the story of her life and later martyrdom. The gothic cathedral is extremely imposing, very large and with impressive stone and wood carvings, medieval paintings and stained glass windows, everything you would expect from a French medieval Cathedral.

The city of Orlèans celebrates Joan of Arc during the first week of May every year with parades, demonstrations and a medieval market and sound and light shows. The festival offers a fascinating insight into local traditions for visitors to the city.

The city of Orlèans is the capital of the Centre-Val de Loire - or the Loire Valley to English speakers. The region is known for its fine vineyards, agricultural production and for its many beautiful chateaux and quaint historical towns.

It is also the commune which gives its name to the US city of New Orlèans. While visiting Orlèans take a walk around the town center or along the banks of the river Loire, which run through this lovely city. Although the city is centrally located it was virtually undamaged during the Second World War, with much of the historical centre remaining intact.

A stroll through the centre will allow you to see for yourself the history and beauty of this French city. One of most splendid and beautiful places to see is the Hotel Groslot in the Place de l’Etape. This 19th century red bricked building still retains its fine interiors from the period. If this is your idea of heaven there are plenty more renaissance townhouses to see, such as the Hotel Cabu which houses the Orlèans city museum, the original town hall and the Masion Jean Dailbert.

Orlèans also features several open air squares, such as Place du Chatelet, again lined with magnificent town houses, some dating back to the 16th century, and the historic Place du Martroi which contains a 19th century statue of Joan of Arc.
