Located in the heart of the historic centre, the Pousada de Beja São Francisco is a historic luxury hotel in Beja, the capital of Portugal's Baixo Alentejo sub region. You can visit the town's imposing Roman castle with its marble keep called the Torre de Menagem, one of the tallest of its kind, as well as the extensive curtain walls which used to have as many as 40 towers. Around the Praça da República you can admire some fine Renaissance palaces and there is an interesting museum, the Museu da Rainha D. Leonor, which has a large collection of late Gothic, Renaissance and baroque paintings, azulejos and funerary monuments.
The Pousada de Beja is also a historic monument in itself, located in the 13th century Franciscan convent of São Francisco, which features a rectangular Gothic chapel with a polygonal apse. After having been a centre for prayer and meditation for centuries, this hotel is the ideal place to take a break from the stresses of daily life and enjoy a relaxing holiday with your friends, family or loved ones. During August and September, there is even a kids club available, where you can leave your children to have fun while you enjoy some time to yourselves.
