Situated in a historical building dating back to the XVIth century, Hotel Cloître Saint Louis Avignon offers an extremely quiet and serene environment.

Rooms are found both in the ancient cloister, and in the splendid modern extension designed in 1991 by the famous French achitect Jean Nouvel.

A good find in an excellent location, 3 minutes walk to Avignon Centre SNCF station and within easy walking distance of the Popes' Palace and the "Pont D'Avignon", restaurants, shops etc. Although close to the centre, it's very peaceful. The restaurant is very attractive being in the old cloisters (glassed in and heated) overlooking a pleasant courtyard. We had dinner there one evening which was good and good value but took breakfast at a brasserie around the corner for 6eu as against 18eu in the hotel.

Overall a great experience in an unique hotel with an absolute reasonable price and very good value for money. Top location within the city walls of Avignon. The roof top terrace with the small but very refreshing pool is an extra plus. Very efficient and helpful staff who didn´t hesitate to send me the Netbook that I forgot in the room by DHL to our next destination in France without even charging something. That´s what I call excellent service. Would stay there again any time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful ancient place. Very beautiful indeed ! However, our room (in the old part) was very tiny for the price paid. Having breakfast in the Cloître is a gorgeous experience, though expansive. Very beautiful halls and public areas except for the swimming pool.

After the noise and bustle of Avignon at festival time this hotel is an oasis of calm .It is also very close to the SNCF station for those arriving by Eurostar.

Nice hotel and decent value for the money. I personally don't think it has the quality of a 4 start hotel (which it claims). The AC worked, but it never got the room cool enough. The staff was rather friendly. The hotel is rather large, and there were always people in the common areas. There is also a small pool on the roof, but it was always full of kids when we were there (which was good for my 7 year old). I would be more likely to recommend this hotel to families with children than to couples looking for a romantic get-away. Overall, good experience, but not a great one.

A good hotel if quoted 3*, rather desapointed for a 4*. Our room was in a new construction, very modern looking, unfortunately with stairs and corridors looking more a jail than a 4* hotel. The romantism of a cloitre completely loss. Excellent Staff however. Restaurant rather expensive but of good quality.

We found a big aerosol can of insecticide in our cupboard upon arrival. It seems as if it was there for good reason as my wife and I clearly suffered from bites. Mine caused an attack of hives. The hotel, a renovated monastery mind you, offers a pay channel with explicit adult show viewing which we thought offputting.Reception desk service poor.

we really enjoyed this hotel. As I studied with the Jesuits (not in France) it brought back memories. It more than met our expectations, and I thought the value/price was well worth it. Any inconveniences caused were minor. The architect did a good job in modernising the building, yet respecting the identity of a 18th century building. The staff were mostly friendly and helpful. The restaurant looked nice, but there are many very good restaurants in Avignon, which are cheaper and with a good view of the town. Around the corner from the hotel there is an excellent rest with food from Alsace. For tourists I would recommend breakfast at McDonalds close to the hotel: they give a breakfast similar, or better that any of the bistrots, but at half the price. (I consider the French as best restaurateurs and gourmands in the world, but there are too many second-rate bistrots and brasseries which overcharge: I only eat at one if its really good). My only suggestion would be that the hotel install a TV camera at the gate of the car park to avoid guests having to get out of their car to request door-opening/closing. The people in Avignon are very friendly and respectful, and I was very glad to able to practise my French a little.

For a 4-star hotel, the beds were extremely uncomfortable (foam mattresses!). The staff was nice enough, but didn't go out of their way to help. The building was a bit of a maze - we had to walk through the dining room to get to our room. I wouldn't stay here again, but would find something close by - this place was located in the perfect spot.

Our room was between the door to access the roof top pool and a toilet. The door to the roof was a heavy self closer which banged when anyone went up or down, the water could be heard at night in the bedroom and when people moved the furniture around. People left the toilet door open so you could see the toilet as you entered or exited the room. However, I requested an extra pillow which was provided very promptly. We were in the modern part of the hotel and it was a little disconcerting to find that one could hear the conversation of the people next to us when we sat out on the balcony area, because the wall did not go right up to the edge due to the design. We did not eat in the hotel as we felt that we got better value for money eating out in Avignon both for breakfast and evening meal.

United Kingdom, Aug 2008
The standard double room was in the roof space and was very hot. The windows were low on the walls and allowed people by the pool to see in. Air conditioning did not work well. Low beams were dangerous. Bathroom was in poor condition. Noise from nearby stairs and corridors was loud. Water in swimming pool was murky. One receptionist was very helpful. Others were polite but did little more than the essentials.

A truly luxurious hotel (in traditional part), in a striking and peaceful setting; decor and breakfast excellent; some staff in reception not particularly welcoming and had poor communication with restaurant staff; in 4* hotel you would expect room service outside restaurant hours or tea-making facilities; pool is only for'plunging'! Would definitely stay again despite these reservations!

Stayed in this hotel during the annual Avignon Festival in July - which was a fantastic event a bit like a less international Edinburgh but with more than 1000 shows in 4 weeks. Highly recommended. Hotel within walking distance from Avignon railway station (and a taxi ride from TGV station) and within the City walls, so very central. Hotel in the grounds of an old Cloister so very peaceful compared with the town as a whole - a little oasis of calm. We asked for (and got) a room in the old part which was up in the eaves but very characterful - long, narrow but spacious with skylights. Service and facilities excellent - small rooftop swimming pool, free internet access. People at reception helpful.

We stayed in a superior modern room which was in some way disappointing as the room was very bland and not sympathetic with the traditional building. Whilst generally the facilities offered by the hotel were very good - and one must accept that there are very few 4 star hotels in Avignon - the real downside of our stay was the very poor air conditioning in the room. We were told that this was not peculiar to our room but was an issue with all rooms. Given that the weather was very hot it did have a negative impact on our stay and we wouldn't return if the air conditioning had not been upgraded.

It was one of the most pleasant hotels we stayed in France/Italy. The decor, layout and surroundings were excellent. Gardens were beautifully kept and the old cloister has been tastefully converted. Staff were courteous and helpful. Clothesline in the bathtub was a bonus. The shower/bathroom area did not have a door (it opened right into the 'corridor'), and there was (frosted) glass between the main living area and shower area. Great for a romantic weekend, but a somewhat embarrassing for three female friends travelling together. I don't think we needed to get to know each other anymore! The map showing location of the hotel from the train station was deceptive - thankfully we didn't decide to walk to the hotel.

After four weeks travelling southern France the Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis was a very pleasant surprise. From our welcome and subsequent attention from front desk staff, to the clean, spacious, and modern room we have no serious complaint. A remarkably attractive, quiet building, right in the centre of historic Avignon.

My stay at the hotel was extreemly pleasant, so I decided to stay another day and the hotel, which was nearly full, offered me a superior room for the price of the normal one I stayed in for the first night. Very friendly and capable staff, you couldn't wish for a more central good hotel in Avignon, between the Palais des Papes and the Station. The cafe de l'opera is 150 meters from the hotel towards the Palais on the right side and definitely one of the better places for not very expensive lunches. I knew Avignon from 30 years ago, when some of my French aunts lived there, but the restauration of an old Jesuit cloister into this hotel is a great addition to a very fine small town, which also has a very interesting arts festival in July. The festival offices are in the same building as the hotel, occupying the other side of the cloister.

Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis is gorgeous in all ways, a tranquil oasis in the touristy heart of Avignon. The restaurant is fantastic, the food exquisite--the most memorable, beautifully presented and delicious dinner we had during our trip to France. Great service, friendly staff. Comfortable, spacious and well-appointed, our room combined the best of a modern hotel with historic ambiance. Amazingly, the hotel has preserved the peaceful aura of the monastery the building once housed, with all the comfort and convenience of four-star accommodation. Staying here and dining in the restaurant was the best part of our visit to Avignon!!

Wow. We stayed at this stunning monastery-turned-4-star-hotel for only 80-something Euros per evening. Beautiful establishment. Enthusiastic and helpful staff. Good location for those traveling by train. Side bar: we were in Avignon for vacation but saw a disproportionately high number of men in suits in and around our hotel.

just bare in mind that the standard rooms have no doors between the shower and the bedroom. The only separation is a glass window - and don't be surprised to get some drops of water... Otherwise the hotel building is nice and within the old city. The breakfast price (16 EUR per person) is overpriced.
Spain, Mar 2008
overall a beautiful hotel in a great location. Breakfast was too expensive though for what was offered. The room itself lacked a door to the bathtub and sink area so it had no privacy which would be fine for a couple but not so much for mother traveling with 18 yr old daughter.

This old beautiful monastery combined with new architecture and comfort is fascinating, and very good made. The location near the old city center and good parking possibilities are very convenient. But to be a 4-star hotel, there are some things that must be maintained, for example worn out floors, damages due to damp in the bathroom. It was also possible to look into the next bathroom through the ventilator. The noise from the lift and staircase was quite disturbing. The breakfast was good but far to expensive (16 euros).

Fantastic hotel. Well attentive staff and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean and stylish. It was located well - within easy / short distance to the main square and other amenities in Avignon. The restaurant was stunning - lovely ambience and the food was of a very high quality. The waiters / waitresses were knowledgeable in respect of wine. Thoroughly recommend this hotel and would definitely visit again if we stayed at Avignon.

This hotel is an old historical church. As such, some of the rooms have been fit to the area available. Our room was small with sloped ceiling. We could not stand completely upright in the shower. However, the staff where very helpful and courteous. The location was within the walls of the town. We also spent two nights in the "sister hotel" of the Hotel Clotre St. Louis - The Hotel Grand Avignon. This hotel is only one block away and much more in keeping with American standards. Hotel Clotre St. Louis is very nice - just to small for our taste if spending multiple nights.

The public areas of the hotel are very nice. The breakfast, while expensive, is very good. I liked that coffee and tea were out and available for many refills, so that we did not have to bother the wait staff for refills to overcome our jetlag. I would definitely stay here again, but I would ask for one of the rooms in the old part of the hotel, as the new, modern rooms, are a bit of a disappointment for such a beautiful historic building. The hotel is convenient to the bus that runs from the TGV, and travelers without too much luggage should skip the taxi and take the bus. The hotel parking lot is very convenient, for those with cars.

The ambiance of the entry courtyard was well worth the four-star rating, and the design of the rooms, public and private, new and old, was exceptional. What a jewel. What a beautiful, serene find--out of the main traffic of the tourist area around the Palais des Papes.

Strange place - however, the setting is very serene and old world. The secure parking is very useful but relies on the staff actually answering the buzzers you have to press going OUT as well as IN. Our record over a week was very patchy, waiting several minutes sometimes. The buttons on the system were a bit battered too and it was not always clear if they were working. Generally we found the reception staff indifferent to us and unwelcoming. Usually no smile or even greeting as we came and went. Good example was on arrival. We checked in and were given the room keys. The receptionist then turned away as if I was supposed to find the lift and rooms by telepathy. I asked to be shown up and it was just as well as the lift was not 'obvious'. The rooms in the old wing were enormous but all bedroom, with tiny bathroom - very nice finish in room and air-con but odd slightly shabby bathroom. Shower sprayed hugely over the floor so we only used it to wash hair in the bath. The hotel advertises a bar - bit of an exaggeration. There is a room with a 'bar' about 4m long and a few seats but you have to ring the bell for service and it is not a very cheery place. Never saw anyone use it in a week. We tried once but no one answered the bell so we went out!! Fortunately you are close to the main street with excellent bars ansd restaurants abounding. The lift in the old wing is hot in the sun but using the stairs means you have to walk through the restaurant or the two meeting rooms to get out - strange layout. Roof swimming pool was nice in the summer heat. This hotel has a great setting and good potential. If the staff had shown any interest in us whatsoever, I would recommend it but I don't really want to.

It was fine for an overnight stay but the web site description was a bit misleading as it focuses on it being a former school and we were in a newer looking room that was clean and spacious but not the charming hotel we thought it to be based on the website description. The staff were absolutely wonderful, they could not do enough for us! We were surprised at our room. The hotel is an ancient building, however, the Standard Jardine room was in a new wing that was no different than a modern motel room, with modern furnishings. I was disapointed. The surrounding area is not the best, but was safe. I was surprised to find parking was 10Euro per night, that was not made clear with the reservation. The old section of Avignon is full of one way streets and it was difficult to find the hotel by car. I had to exit the old town and enter through a different portal. The property would not bring me back, however, the staff would! Avignon is a good base to visit Provence.

Excellent hotel and rooms - conveniently located (walking distance to the palais des papes) and had on-site parking. The reservation was for some strange (and still unknown) reason cancelled but the front desk folks at the hotel (Olivier) was extremely helpful and gave us a room for the same price. The courtyard is incredible and so is the outside breakfast area. Breakfast is very good but is a steep 16 euros per person. The only improvement I can make is that there was a small bit of mold in the corner of the bathroom (outside the bathtub) and it would be nice to not have this. I would definitely stay here again since it left a wonderful impression on me.

Lovely hotel, which is probably even lovelier in the summer when the courtyard is green and you can use the pool. Very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant closes a bit early for a hotel though.

Reduziertes Design ohne Plüsch und Schnickschnack in alten Klostergemäuern: Das Hotel war genau unser Geschmack! Zentral in Avignon gelegen und trotzdem ruhig (siehe Klostermauern!). Sehr empfehlenswert!

The hotel has a nice garden which turn out really good on photographs. The room is a good size with a comfortable balcony. The bathroom is an open concept, hence no doors. We booked 2 rooms and had to get the kids over to our room for their grandmother to take her shower.

I had a great stay in the Clarion Cloitre Saint Louis, a special mention to Katell and José who have been of a great help, welcoming and friendly. I recommend this Hotel as it is also very well situated in Avignon.

Our first room was in the new section and it was dark and not very clean. When we finally got moved to the old section after 2 nights (we paid more for it), we had a lovely, clean room facing the courtyard.

A beautiful historic building converted to a hotel, with a very modern air conditioned extension, within the walled city, excellent food and service, hope to return many times.
