Vienna’s gourmet culture is multi-faceted and there are many options for vegetarians who want to get to the heart of Viennese cuisine without compromising their principles. Here are some of the best or most interesting vegetarian Restaurants in Vienna.

Kostlich, located on Farbergasse, is a good veggie restaurant in the centre of Vienna. It is only open during the day and so works as a lunch stop for vegetarian visitors to the city. It has a very small seating area which is great for getting to know the people around you – most of them will be locals. Kostlich is certainly not the cheapest place to eat, but neither is it too expensive. If the seating area is too crowded or you just want to eat outside they are happy to serve the food to take away and make sure to try the sinful desserts.
Nestled on Hollergasse is the Hollerei restaurant which brings the best of North African and Asian vegetarian cooking to Vienna. It is set not far from the Schonbrunn Palace so is a great way to round off a day of culture with an evening meal to remember. Summer evenings are best spent in the gardens at Hollerei, with delicious food and friendly atmosphere, are magical memories of Vienna.
Xu’s Vegetasia on Kaiserstrasse is a favourite with visitors and locals alike. The Asian food they serve includes Chinese staples as well as some delicious South-East Asian dishes. The lunch buffet is particularly recommended and is well-known to most backpackers passing through Vienna. You can choose to eat in the attractive garden or inside the restaurant itself, summer evenings are a great time to visit but Xu’s is only open in the evenings at the weekend – during the week it’s lunch only.
One of the most interesting vegetarian places in Vienna is Rupp’s Cafe, a half Irish theme bar and half veggie restaurant. The combination doesn’t feel any less incongruous when you arrive but the atmosphere, the drinks and the food quickly win you over. Since it is a bar, Rupps is the best place for veggies to get food late at night and it also serves excellent vegetarian versions of popular Viennese dishes such as the famous Wiener Schnitzel.
Last but not least, a great option for vegetarian self-catering visitors to Vienna, is the Makro 1 café at the Fleischmarkt. It is a good place for lunch in the centre of Vienna and also sells a wide selection of veggie and organic food to take away and eat at your leisure. It is closed during weekends which can be a bit annoying but otherwise the prices are moderate and the staff friendly.
