Nightlife in Venice

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

There are a number of excellent nightlife options in Venice, including bars, pubs, cinemas and theaters.  Despite the wide selection, it is best that you plan for an evening early, especially where the bars and pubs are concerned.  Many of these don’t stay open late and finding a venue in the middle of the week for a late night can be quite a challenge.

Although Piazza San Marco offers a number of venues for an entertaining evening, there are two others locations that might better suit your tastes, particularly if you want to enjoy a little “pub crawling” or bar hopping for the evening. In Dorsoduro and near the University Ca’ Foscari is Campo Santa Margherita, the most popular nightlife scene amongst the locals. On the west side of the famous Rialto Bridge near the main vegetable market is Erbaria, the second most popular nightlife area.

Here are a few more suggestions to consider when venturing out to experience Venice nightlife:

Raging Pub – one of the trendiest venues, the Raging Pub is located in the Campo Santa Margherita. This is an upbeat area in the heart of the nightlife scene in central Venice.  This is a great sports bar and the drink menu is very diverse.

Bacaro Jazz – for the jazz aficionado who is in search of great music and a tasty meal to enjoy along with it.  It also has one of the largest cocktail menus in Venice.

Fiddler’s Elbow or Inishark Irish Pubs – if you want the feeling of a classic Irish pub setting, these two establishments shouldn’t be missed when you are vacationing in Venice. Fiddler’s is cozy and inexpensive while the Inishark is a bit more elegant and pricey.  Both are favorites of the locals as well as international travelers.

Torino @ Notte – located only three-minutes walk from the Piazza San Marco, this music bar is one of the best-kept nightlife secrets in Venice. They have a webpage where you can check out the schedule for live concerts or DJs.

Café Blue – locals and tourists alike enjoy this laid-back setting that offers a fun and hip.  Café Noir is located next door and the vibe is very similar. It is not uncommon to see a party in the street going on in between the two buildings.  If you want to spend time hanging out with the locals and making new friends, these are must-visit venues.

On the night of September 9, 2010, I had a glass of red wine from Veneto at Lavena’s Caffe. The stars were out above St. Mark’s and the orchestras were dueling. Ah, what a perfect night.
