The United Kingdom is well recognized as one of the world’s major tourist destinations. However, while so many international visitors tend to focus primarily on the city of London and its many historical landmarks and other structures, they are missing some of the best music festivals that the UK has to offer. Not only are there a large number of these music festivals, they cover just about every music genre imaginable.

The big three
Many of their music festivals are famous worldwide with the three primary ones being:
Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts – known simply as Glastonbury or just “Glasto” for short, this is the UK’s largest performing arts festival. Although it is best known for the music, other arts include cabaret, circus, comedy, dance, and theater.
Acoustic Gathering Festival of Scarborough – the stage of this free music festival sits in the middle of a lake where the performers are taken to by row boat.
Basingstoke Live – It is the best attended or largest annual free music festival in the UK with the attendance in 2010 topping the 30,000 mark.
Enjoy all types of music
Many of the annual festivals feature a huge variety of different music genres, so just about every taste in music is satiated. Examples of the music festivals and genres that you can attend and enjoy at different times throughout the year include:
- Classical music and opera
- Dance and electronic music
- Tribute act festivals
The traveling festivals
There are certain music festivals that appear in different locations but still occur on an annual basis. These include:
BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend – run by the BBC and held in a different location every year. In 2012 it will be held in Hackney.
Bloodstock Open Air – strictly heavy metal music
Family Values Tour – music includes alternative metal and rock, funk metal, hip-hop, industrial metal, nu metal, post-grunge and hardcore, and rap metal
Ozzfest – hard rock along with extreme and heavy metal music
Sonisphere Festival – a touring music festival that takes place between June and August throughout Europe.
Warped Tour – once a music festival only that showcased some of the best in punk rock music, it is now a combination traveling festival that still features that genre of music along with extreme sports including BMX and skateboarding. Punk Rock is still the primary genre of music that is featured. However, several other genres have been added to the line-up.
