Want to travel alone and don’t know how?

We wonder how some friends or family can manage to travel solo since we are too scared to do it because we don’t know the benefits it gives over group traveling as for example total freedom of meeting more people. People are too scared of what they don’t know and now, we are going to look at the few points to have in mind In case you decide to try out this new experience. These points to note include:

  • Informing your family, friends and most people connected to you by leaving them your contacts like phone, email or pager numbers. This should help you contact them at anytime in case something goes wrong.
  • Through the internet or a travel agency, find out more about the place you are going to visit for example the culture, language, currency or forex exchange, immigration rules and all those details that will make your life easier to communicate with the people there.
  • Find out the best places to stay for foreign tourists like hotels, resorts or even home stays which have been known to be the best and cheapest way in which tourists meet and interact with the locals.
  • Protect your property by putting it in a safe, locking your luggage, windows, door and room.
  • Save money by making use of the special deals available like food, films but since when one is alone, they are able to budget the way they want without arguing about it.
  • To avoid loneliness, you can go where you want, try new experiences, meet and mingle with other different people as you smile and ask questions. Try not to be shy and show people that you find them interesting for example going straight to people and asking them if you can share a table with them, or if you are in a club or bar and begin chatting with a girl or a guy and they tell you they have boyfriends or girlfriends, try not to panic or get scared thus running away.
  • When its eating time, go to informal places like fast or café chains because there is a saying that “the only thing lonelier than sleeping alone is eating alone”. These places give a chance to concentrate on the food and enjoy your day. This can be strengthened by bringing a book or laptop and do some reading and writing while you are enjoying the spotlight.
  • You have to remain as cautious as possible to avoid people who would like to take advantage of you in some way by keeping a low profile and not being so flashy to attract the attention.

You can’t be a solo traveler without being open minded and trusting your instincts to make a good judgment because solo traveling is only for people who are qualified to do almost anything with specialty.

Some people may not want to travel on their own for a week or two but can’t find anyone to go with them. For them, there’s always group travel. You set out solo but meet up with a bunch of nice people to hang out with for a week. I especially like it for active vacations, such as biking and hiking.

I am a 50something woman that just returned from a month in Europe BY MYSELF. I was a little nervous in certain cities, but had NO problem. I took precautions-under clothes money wallet-, safes in rooms, pre-research of cities I was visiting. Spent a little more $ for safer location of hotels. Careful of who I spoke to. Just like at home-when I go out by myself. I would take a little more time to learn a little more of the language of the country I am visiting, but even then, I drew pictures. It was so FUN and now I am spoiled. I think I will find it more difficult to travel with others-now that I have done it alone. Do what you want, when you want… and if you get “lost” Oh well… You will probably see something really cool that you might not have seen. Pack light and do laundry, say, in Riomaggiore. I did, and met a cute couple from Sweden (we shared a dryer). Espresso vending machine in the laundromat :) . If you forget something, now you have a good reason to buy a souvenier.
    Bon Voyage!!!
