The airport in Athens is a major Aegean, Balkan, and eastern Mediterranean regional transportation hub and is the preferred venue for tourists visiting the city. It has also become a popular gateway to Asian and the Middle East countries. Upon your arrival, you will probably have to figure out which form of transportation you want to use in order to get to central Athens from the airport. Athens is one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean region and is comprised of several districts.
Fortunately, the area is well served by several transportation venues, so it shouldn’t be hard to figure out how to get from Athens Airport to central Athens. There are three primary transportation venues for getting from the airport to your hotel in the center of the city:
Buses – the city is served by a large network of buses including diesel, electric, and natural gas fueled. There are 4 bus routes that will transport you from the airport to central part of the city and other areas of town such as Piraeus. These are the X93, the X95, the X96, and the X97 routes. Passengers disembark at the Kiffisos station, which is the departure level of the airport and depart for the city by bus from the Lionson Station, which is the arrivals level. There is also the KTEL Express which can transport you to areas such as Kalyvia, Keratea, Lavrio, Markopoulo, and Rafina.
Railway – immediately adjacent to the airport is a rail station that you can easily reach by virtue of an elevated walkway. This station is served by both the Athens Metro line and the Proastiakos which is the suburban rail line. The Metro Line route 3 connects the Athens Airport to the heart of the city. Additionally, it is connected to the Larissis or Athens Central Railway Station and other destinations such as Corinth via Proastiakos and the port located at Piraeus.
Taxi – the taxi waiting area is situated at the arrivals level by Exit 3 and there are always some available no matter what time of the day or night you land. Additionally, private limousines are available near Exits 3 and 4 along the inner curbside area of the arrivals area should you want a more stylish transport in order to reach the center of the city.
Toll road – another option, should you choose to do the driving yourself, is to rent your vehicle at the airport and travel the Attiki Odos toll highway to the center of Athens or all the way to the north end of town. Depending on where the rental vehicles are situated, you might have to use the free shuttle bus service that takes people to the car rental area.
