The Tower of London – Packed full of history and drama, the Tower has to be one of the most infamous historical sites in England. Built in 1066 and originally serving as a royal palace, it came to be a notorious prison housing the likes of Anne Boleyn before her execution and at one time even Queen Elizabeth I was imprisoned here by her sister Queen Mary. A Beefeater will take you on a tour and show you all the grizzly sites as well as a viewing of the unmissable crown jewels.

Westminster Abbey – A magnificent building which is the epicentre of the city’s royal and political history. Royal coronations, weddings and funerals have taken place in this building since 1066. Visit no less than 17 graves of monarchs who have been laid to rest here. Audio guides and verger led tours are available on site.

St Paul’s Cathedral – The site was originally founded in 604 but it’s most recent incarnation was built by Christopher Wren in 1677 after the Great Fire. There are several different tours available on site, but climbing the dome and listening to the Whispering Gallery is one way to really feel the atmosphere of this majestic place.

Temple Church – Embodying 800 years of history, this church was built by the Knights Templar, the original Christian crusaders. One of it’s original uses was for the knights initiation ceremonies. Touring this church you will see the distinctive effigies of the medieval knights laid to rest there.

These are just some of the historical sites you can see in the city today. If you only have a little time then even just doing these 4 tours will leave you reeling from the atmosphere of the past.

I think this is a wonderful idea. The best experiences I had with my family were the trips we took together when I was growing up.
