Top 5 Restaurants in Prague, Czech Republic

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

This is a list of my favourite restaurants in Prague. I haven’t eaten in every restaurant in the city so I cannot claim this list is an exhaustive study, but if you have any recommendations then please leave them in the comments section.

Restaurants in Prague

Triton Restaurant

If you have money to spend and want to eat in the vicinity of Wenceslas Square then Triton is the place for you. I wouldn’t normally have tried a restaurant actually on the Square as the best quality is usually found in the side streets, but for Triton one can make an exception. The restaurant is located underneath the Adria Hotel in Art Nouveau cellars which give the dining experience a unique atmosphere in keeping with the surrounding city. The food here is excellent, as one would expect for the prices, and the menu is wide ranging and imaginative.

Cafe Slavia

Although not strictly a restaurant, Cafe Slavia is deserving of a place on this list. Located next to the river and opposite the Prague National Theatre, Slavia has a long tradition of attracting bohemian and artistic types. This continues today and the famous faces to have visited Slavia are pictured on the walls. The food here is excellent, although most people opt for a coffee and a pastry snack rather than a meal, and the prices are affordable by all. Most evenings a piano player also serenades the guests who can chat, mingle, or simply watch the world go past.

Bellevue Restaurant

Those looking for a more exclusive and celebrated experience should try the Bellevue. Understated elegance is the theme here of both the decor and the menu, and the wine list is said to be one of the best in Prague. The prices are what you would expect from such a sophisticated restaurant but are worth it, especially if you are in town celebrating or want to make someone feel special. I have read stories about the sumptuous private dining room at the Bellevue but have never been lucky enough to find out if they are true or not.

Ariana Afghan restaurant

One of the most surprising culinary experiences I have had in Prague was in Ariana, the only Afghan restaurant I have ever tried. Although similar to Indian cooking the Afghan style has enough idiosyncrasies to keep diners intrigued and mixes flavours in ways that were, to me, entirely new. The decor here is like stepping from the streets of Prague into a Kabuli beer cellar, which is enough of a contradiction to keep you thinking throughout dinner.

Pravda Restaurant

Pravda describes itself as a cosmopolitan restaurant, and magnificently achieves this goal. The eclectic mix of styles and tastes is in evidence everywhere, particularly in the ultra-modern furnishings and the global menu. Perhaps this crosses the line to pretension in small areas, the political messages associated with the word Pravda (truth) are a little over the top, but these transgressions can be forgiven. Pravda is especially convenient for anyone who has spent the day shopping in the boutiques of Parizska Trida, saving you from lugging those shopping bags further than you need to.

Hi Fernanda, I believe that this dish is roasted veal cheeks (possibly in red wine sauce) and cooked with mashed potatoes from the Bellevue restaurant in the Czech Republic.
