Oftentimes overlooked as a travel destination for the likes of Barcelona or Madrid, Toledo is a gem – more like a diamond in the rough.

The city dates back to the Middle Ages and is majestically perched above the Tagus River. Additionally, Toledo was designated one of UNESCO’s Heritage Sites in 1986. The Old Town features historic cobblestone streets that wind through the city and are oftentimes very busy and crowded with local residents, tourists, and an astounding amount of cars, trucks, and vans. Toledo is relatively a quiet city at night due to the fact that there are fewer dance clubs than what you would normally encounter in a town of this size. If it’s recorded music that you’re longing for, you’ll need to head for one of the plazas in town to have an active evening.
Here, it is not unusual to find yourself in an elbow-to-elbow crowd enjoying pints of great beers or glasses of some of the finest European wines. It is also an excellent venue for the music of big cities such as New York or Los Angeles. The following is a list of the most recommended pubs in Toledo:
1. Camelot
Located in proximity to the 1,000-year old Cristo de la Luz Mosque, Camelot is located in a basement and is considered a classic part of the Toledo nightlife. The bar features Spanish music emphasizing the sounds of the movida and other 1980s music common to Madrid.
2. Pícaro
Take a break and spend a few hours being entertained during your weekend visit to Toledo. There is always a live performance going on ranging from cabaret to country and even a few magic shows thrown in for good measure.
3. Venta del Alma
Venta del Alma is a disco-bar that caters to the “above 30” crowd. Located in a relaxed atmosphere, the establishment has been tastefully remodeled and decorated in an old-fashioned farm style setting. It’s like having cocktails in a country house.
4. Catedral de la Música
This spacious bar was designed by one of the most sophisticated interior designers in Spain and offers what feels like a haven of exclusivity and luxury. The grand piano on the premises is what the establishment is most noted for along with the many piano concerts that occur with regularity.
5. Cuevas
Located in the center of Toledo’s old town, Cuevas features an upper floor that has a large dance area and even an indoor football stadium (of sorts), and a basement that is the typical basement pub that has been preserved just like a medieval cellar – called a “cueva” and therefore the origination of the name.
