If you’re looking for the perfect destination in which to spoil your partner for the weekend, then you can’t do much better than Edinburgh.

With dramatic scenery, a thriving cultural scene, numerous shopping opportunities and a host of excellent bars and restaurants – all delivered with a healthy dose of friendly celtic hospitality – Scotland’s beautiful and historic capital city is the ideal location for a romantic city break.

1. Take in some culture

Whether it’s art and literature, music and theatre, or simply a taste of traditional Scottish heritage that you’re looking for, Edinburgh has something to suit all tastes. The imposing Edinburgh Castle, which has overlooked the city from its rocky outcrop above the streets for nearly three thousand years, is an excellent place to start.

Or try a leisurely stroll round one of Scotland’s three most important art galleries, all of which are within walking distance of each other. The National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, house some of the best in Scottish and International art, and are an excellent way to while away an afternoon.

If all that walking seems like a bit too much effort, why not sample some of Scotland’s best known export at the Scottish Whisky Experience, a great little museum next to the castle, where you can taste the amber nectar for yourself!

2. Shop till you drop

Edinburgh is a paradise for shoppers with a wealth of bargains and luxury goods to be found. From independent boutiques and jewellers along Rose Street (ideal for that most special of romantic purchases), to the traditional Scottish goods found on the Royal Mile, such as shortbread and lambs wool sweaters, there is something for everyone.

Check out Harvey Nicholls’ huge store at St Andrew’s Square for designer goods, and don’t miss a visit to Jenners, one of Scotland’s oldest and most loved department stores.

3. Bring back cocktail hour

Edinburgh has a vibrant and cosmopolitan café and bar scene, which makes it an excellent place to relax with a pre-dinner drink. Whether it’s an old classic that tickles your fancy, or a new local creation, there are plenty of bustling venues to choose from.

George Street alone has several good examples, including Tiger Lilly, The Living Room and The Opal Lounge, where rumour has it Prince William was a regular customer during his time at St Andrew’s University.

4. Enjoy a candlelit dinner

No romantic weekend is complete without a cosy candlelit dinner, and The Witchery is one of the most intimate and atmospheric dining destinations imaginable. Nestled in a dramatic 16th Century building at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, this beautifully decorated restaurant offers fine dining in the most luxurious of settings.

Surrounded by antique gilded candlesticks and opulent red leather upholstery, The Witchery has a truly magical atmosphere. One of the dining rooms, the intriguingly titled Secret Garden, is even reached by a hidden stone staircase and enjoys views over a secluded courtyard.

5. Catch a rickshaw home

After all that fine food and wine, the trip back to you hotel over Edinburgh’s famously cobbled streets can be something of a challenge. Instead of grabbing a taxi, why not take the weight off your feet by hiring one of the numerous rickshaws that trundle round the city centre?

These novelty cycle transports, which are usually peddled by students and backpackers, may be considerably more expensive than jumping in a cab, but what more romantic way to end your trip than snuggling under a blanket with your loved one and watching the city lights flit past on your way home?*

Villa D’este was once a private refuge for the Catholic clergy. Commissioned by the Cardinal Ippolito II D’este in the 17th century this UNESCO World Heritage Site is now home to ticket holders.

The Villa has an amazing décor with each room having it’s own specific theme. The renaissance architecture is completely outshined by the sprawling fountain dotted gardens. You can find Villa D’este in the town of Tivoli. Tivoli itself is a beautiful town that sits between rolling green hills and tumbling waterfalls. You can really see why the Cardinal chose this town to set up his getaway.

The outstanding mansion is built on a hill overlooking the gardens, every window you will pass will give you an remarkable vantage point. The gardens are the real treasure of Villa D’este, after snaking your way down the balconies and grand staircases you will find your senses bombarded. The colors and smells of beautiful flowers and the sounds of hundreds of fountains of all shapes and sizes.

The garden is constructed on a series of hills, at the lowest point lies three fish packed reflecting ponds. Out of over 500 fountains you will have your own favourite choices. I loved walking next to the Fontana Delle Cento Cannelle or The Hundred Fountains. This line of one hundred water jets dropping into a decorated stone trough leads you to the Fountain of Neptune and another one of my favourites: The Water Organ Fountain. The Fontana dell’Organo is a huge crowd drawer and is an impressive display of Villa D’este hydraulic water pump technology. The Fontana dell’Organo is an elaborate hydraulic water-powered fountain that sounds off for the public every two hours (the first performance is at 10:30 AM). The water organ truly is unique and the music it creates is as beautiful as the fountain itself. The garden is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon, strolling past fountains, grottoes, and ponds; the sound of the moving water really sets the mind at ease.

One of your options for arriving at Villa D’este is to take the train on the Rome-Pescara line and get off at the Tivoli station stop. Villa D’este is located near the center of town and is easily accessible by foot after you arrive in the Tivoli train station. The Villa opens at 8:30 AM and closes one hour before sunset but is closed on major holidays and all Mondays. The tickets cost around €10 depending on whether there are extra exhibits on display. Spend a day at Villa D’este and enjoy the relaxed ambience, but make sure you go to the bathroom before making your rounds; those fountains can really get to you.

Paris is filled with gardens and parks with luscious green lawns that simply beg for you to flop down on them with a blanket, baguette, cheese and a good bottle of wine.

But more often than not, just as you begin to approach that tempting emerald expanse, you’ll see a sign stating: “Pelouse interdite.” In other words: “no sitting on the grass.” You’ll see this sign so often; you might start to wonder if Parisians have something against picnics. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Parisians are huge fan of picnics – they just don’t necessarily have them on the grass. Parisian picnics can take place almost anywhere: park benches, bridges, the stone banks of the Seine. And, if you’re desperate to find a nice grassy lawn on which you can sit down and have a nibble, don’t fret – you can find that too.

Best Places to Picnic on the Grass

1. Parc Monceau.

This stunning park, created in the 18th century by the Duke of Orleans, is the perfect place for a traditional flop-down-on-grass picnic. Here, you’ll find it all: beautiful flower beds, a romantic duck pond, elegant white stone statues – even a little waterfall and grotto. It’s a great spot to picnic with children as there is also a well-equipped playground and pony rides available. (8th and 17th arrondissements, Metro: Monceau (line 2)).

Top Paris Hotel near Parc Monceau: Hotel Elysees Parc Monceau

2. Champ de Mars.

Munching on French cheese and bread while staring up at the Eiffel Tower is the dream of many visitors to Paris. Happily, this is one fantasy that is easy to fulfill as you can almost always find a place to spread out a blanket on the Champ de Mars, the nearly half-mile of lawn stretching before the famous tower. (7th arrondissement, Metro: Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel (line 6), Ecole Militaire (line 8)).

Top Paris Hotel near Champs de Mars: Hotel La Bourdonnais

3. Place de Vosges.

It’s easy to imagine in 17th century Paris when you settle on the grass in this lovely old square. Picnics are popular here, especially on French holidays, so be sure to arrive early to stake your piece of ground. Feel free to bring your laptop along as well because free Wifi is available in the park. (4th arrondissement, Metro: St. Paul, Bastille (line 1)).

Top Paris Hotel near Place des Vosges: L’Hostellerie du Marais

4. Parc des Buttes Chaumont.

This park is an original place to have a picnic as it is located atop a rocky hill and offers spectacular panoramic views of Paris. After lunch, take a stroll through this 61-acre park and enjoy the various attractions, including the waterfall, suspension bridge and Romanesque temples. (19th arrondissement, Metro: Buttes-Chaumont, Botzaris (line 7), Laumière (line 5)).

Top Paris hotel near Buttes Chaumont: Hotel La Perdrix Rouge

5. Musée Rodin.

Few people realize that you’re allowed to picnic on the grass in the beautiful sculpture garden of the Rodin Museum, so if you’re looking for a secluded spot in a romantic setting, you’ve found your place. (7th arrondissement, Metro: Varenne, Invalides or Saint-François-Xavier (lines 13)).

Top Paris Hotel near the Rodin Museum: Hotel K+K Cayré

Best Places to Picnic off the Grass

1. Ile St. Louis.

The banks of the Seine at the Ile St. Louis are a traditional spot for a Parisian picnic. It’s a lovely place to raise a glass of champagne to the passing Bateaux-Mouche, while enjoying close-up views of the Hôtel de Ville (town hall) and Notre-Dame Cathedral. (4th arrondissement, Metro: Hôtel de Ville (lines 1, 11), Cité (line 4)).

Top Paris Hotel near Ile St. Louis: Hotel Des Deux Iles

2. Pont des Arts.

Picnicking on the wooden slats of this pedestrian bridge is thought by some to be the ultimate Parisian picnic experience. It’s a particularly popular spot for twenty-somethings and as you eat, you’ll inevitably be entertained someone strumming on a guitar, blowing a sax, painting a picture of the incomparable view. Go at sunset for an especially magical experience. (1st and 6th arrondissements, Metro: Pont Neuf (line 7), Louvre-Rivoli (line 1))

Top Paris Hotel near Pont des Arts: Hotel Prince de Conti

3. Canal St. Martin.

The stone banks of the canal St. Martin is an increasingly popular place to picnic. Dine under lovely overlapping branches of plane trees or in full-sun: the canal is 4.5 kilometers long so you’ll have your pick of places. After your picnic, you may opt to take an excursion of the canal by boat, where you’ll get a different perspective on many famous Parisian sites. (10th arrondissement, Metro: Place de la Republique, Gare de l’Est, Place de la Bastille de Stalingrad).

Top Paris Hotel near Canal St. Martin: Hotel Marceau Bastille

4. Place de Dauphine.

Tucked away in a corner of the Île de la Cité is a charming, leafy square that most people only stumble upon by chance. You’ll know to come here on purpose. Spread out some napkins on the park benches and dine while reveling in the beauty of the square, the marble walls of the neighboring Palace of Justice, and the peace and quiet. (1st arrondissement, rue Henri-Robert, Metros: Pont Neuf (line 7) and Cité (line 4)).

Top Paris Hotel near Place Dauphine: Grand Hotel Dechampaigne

5. Jardin des Tuileries & Jardin du Luxembourg.

These gardens are among the loveliest and most famous in Paris, but definitely fall in the “pelouse interdite” category. However, you can have a picnic at these legendary spots: just pull up a couple of the green metallic chairs that are liberally placed through the gardens, and eat wherever you like. (Jardin des Tuileries, 1st arrondissement, Metro: Tuileries or Concorde (line 1); Jardin du Luxembourg, 6th arrondissement, Metro: Odéon (lines 4, 10)).

Because St Petersburg is located so far north it is strongly affected by the seasonal shift in the earth’s axis.

In winter this means the days are short and the nights interminably long. However, in summer it means that there is no darkness and a state of twilight reigns from eleven in the evening until two in the morning, a phenomenon known as the White Nights.

During the White Nights an enormous change comes over St Petersburg. Its taciturn and dour residents become relaxed and charming, a festival atmosphere takes over the city and visitors flock in from around Russia and the rest of the world.

The deliciously soft quality of the midnight sunlight is perfect for enjoying the beauty of St Petersburg’s architecture and many people stroll through the streets until morning. Others prefer to sit in the many parks, usually with some beer, and chat with friends.

In fact, so many of the residents of the city are out socialising at night that St Petersburg begins to have the same lethargic and unhurried air of Paris in the summer, with tourists making up a sizable proportion of the people on the streets.

The White Nights are thought to be the most romantic festival of Russia, and so many couples can be seen walking arm in arm through the night. The city’s tourism authorities are now trying to spread this custom abroad in the hope of bringing in more visitors. It must be said that sharing the beautiful experience is very moving and I would recommend any couple looking for an unusual summer holiday to try experiencing the White Nights.

Visitors should be aware that the city can get so full during the White Nights that it can be difficult to find a hotel in St Petersburg at the last minute. It is advisable that you book well in advance. The hotel rooms available are also much more expensive during the summer period, this is not unusual but it does mean that the rates for moderate or low standard rooms are much high than they should be.

Independent travel to Russia can be quite difficult because of the need for visas and the fact that most people do not speak English. This can put many first time visitors off. However, these days there are many tour companies specialising in trip to St Petersburg during the White Nights and they will handle everything from flight booking, airport transfers and, of course, booking a hotel.

The White Nights is also a popular time for cruise ships to put in to St Petersburg. If you are planning a Baltic or northern cruise then it is certainly worth investigating if this is possible for you.

A useful tip is to realise that although the strict White Nights period straddles the summer solstice, a similar effect is felt several weeks either side of this. Visitors wishing to avoid the mad tourist crush of the actual solstice and increase their chances of getting a hotel room may wish to bear this in mind.

Saxony is the place to visit if you want to see some of the most beautiful castles in Germany.

With plenty of fairytale-like castles, Renaissance and Baroque palaces, fascinating monasteries, impressive fortresses and lovely gardens, Saxony is a great travel destination for either a romantic weekend break or a cultural holiday in the very heart of Europe.

Each summer, the ‘Free State of Saxony‘, which boasts a rich cultural heritage and a strong musical tradition, provides music and art lovers with a whole host of events. This summer’s highlights are the Medieval Festival of Weesenstein Castle, Romantic Evenings and Festival of Chamber Music at Moritzburg Castle, the Summer Film Festival of Mildenstein Castle, Flower and Garden Show at Altzella Monastery Park,… And if you are looking for romance, classic music, ball and fine dining, do not miss the Summer Festival of Rammenau Castle.

However, since the Castles and Palaces of Saxony often house interesting museums and permanent art exhibitions, these fascinating historical landmarks are really worth a visit in any season of the year. It is really difficult to make a choice; so check out our short list of Baroque palaces, Gothic fortresses and royal residences that you shouldn’t miss out on your Saxony castles tour:

Kriebstein Castle

The best preserved castle of Saxony, Burg Kriebstein boasts original furniture and painted wood ceilings dating back from the Late Gothic period. While visiting the Treasure Vault, Hunting Room, Gothic Room and Kriebstein Chapel of this charming knight’s castle nestled in a wild, romantic forest, you will feel like a princess or a fairytale hero.

Moritzburg Castle

Boasting superb Meissen porcelain pieces and Baroque furniture, this splendid moated castle is surrounded by enchanting woodlands, meadows and lakes. A popular tourist attraction in Saxony, Schloss Moritzburg is really worth a visit for the impressive collections of antlers and Baroque leather wall hangings featured in the Castle Museum, as well as its miniature lighthouse and the Pheasant Castle Moritzburg, a Saxon rococo-styled hunting palace.

Rammenau Castle

Schloss Rammenau is a charming Baroque castle situated halfway between Dresden and Bautzen. Built in the 17th Century, this Saxon Castle used to be a summer residence and boasts magnificent interiors with neo-classical influences. Interesting things to see in Rammenau include the Mirror Hall, the Blue Salon, the Golden Room, the Bulgarian room, the Chinese Room and the Devil’s Room, as well as the German philosopher JG Fichte Memorial.

Dresden and the Elbe Castles

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dresden Elbe Valley is really worth a visit for Dresden’s royal residence and the three Elbe Castles. The capital city of Saxony offers an array of historical landmarks including the mysterious Dresden Fortress and the Science Tunnel, the Renaissance palace of Dresden Stableyard featuring the impressive “Procession of Princes” mural, and the Versailles-style Dresden Zwinger housing artistic treasures such as Raphael‘s Sistine Madonna and the Meissen porcelain carillon.

Tips for your Saxon Castles Holiday: Romantic Castle Hotels & Palace Tour Cards

For a really romantic stay in Saxony with a touch of luxury, you can book an accommodation in a castle hotel such as the charming Schloss Hotel Dresden-Pillnitz. This Dresden hotel on the Elbe River is located in the park of Pillnitz Castle, a former summer residence of the Kings of Saxony, and offers comfortable, quiet guest rooms, a gourmet restaurant and banqueting facilities.

In order to make visitors save time and money, the Saxony Tourist Board offers a Palaces Tour Card that allows free admission to over forty of the Saxony’s castles from Dresden to Leipzig to Chemnitz. For further information on the Saxon palaces and residences check out the Map of Saxony Castles available on the Saxony Tourist Board website.

One of the wonderful things about Berlin is its ever-changing nature.

The last two decades have brought astonishing cultural changes to the city’s many boroughs; each neighborhood has its own identity and an constantly morphing demographic. Most interestingly, since a second wave of gentrification has gripped the city, changing its famed squats and cafes into high fashion boutiques and Mickiedees, a large portion of the artistic population has continued to migrate to areas of cheaper rents and greater solidarity. One such fantastic new neighborhood affected by these changes is the southern borough of Neukolln, just south of Kreuzberg. The area is Kreuzberg’s little cousin, boasting the same vibe and Turkish undercurrent; however, its gems are slightly more hidden and romantic in their precious newness. My time living in this area invited an almost weekly opening of new galleries and art spaces, cafes and bars. I found it a perfect playground for a romantic adventure with the one you love. Here are my top date spots in this budding new area, guaranteed to show your honey a good time.

Turkish Market

An early start to you evening might include a stroll through the Turkish market which happens every Tuesday and Friday along Maybachufer Strasse along the river just south of Kottbusser Tor. The market offers mostly fresh produce and sewing and artistic supplies, but it can be a grand opportunity for a quick bite to eat or a coffee and baklava to enjoy on the riverside. If shopping for picnic supplies, remember to compare prices between dealers, sometimes the prices in the middle can be much cheaper than those at the end. A large variety of cheeses and spreads, fresh fruits, nuts and preserves make this market one of the best places in the city to get high quality foods.

Maybachufer Strasse between Kottbusser Damm and Friedlestrasse

Picnic on the Spree

A branch of the Spree divides Kreuzberg and Neukolln (an area nicknamed Kreuzkolln by the locals) and lovely patches of grass and trees line the walls along the river. This is a perfect area to enjoy a picnic and the visual pleasures of this area. Walk west of Kottbusser Damm on the north side of the river and you’re come to a spot where many relax on a warm sunny day. A quick hop of a short fence will put you among the plethora of young people who are too lazy to work, and would much rather spend their days by the waterside writing poetry, drawing pictures, or simply taking in the view.

Nansen

A small restaurant with modest and casual furnishings offers spectacular food and wine. Though it boasts a mostly German regular clientele, the staff is very friendly and English speaking and happy to translate their menu and make suggestions. The menu, which is small and changes nightly, is somewhat traditional and offers massive portions of German delicacies. Paying a little more for the featured entree is well worth it, as you are likely to be treated to a delicious venison or leg of goose. One half houses a beautiful midcentury bar where you can enjoy a cigarette and espresso post meal or sample the generous list of whiskies and liquors.
Maybachufer 39

Moviemento

This small independently run cinema is one of the area’s historical landmarks having existed since the early 20th century. Moviemento plays a number of German and foreign films, usually shown in the original languages (as opposed to most cinemas which overdub in German). The cinema often partakes in film festivals, and can be rented for private events and viewings, which ensures that the playlist is fresh and diverse. Cheap and cozy, Moviemento is a perfect spot for a couple of hours alone in the dark.
Kottbusser Damm 22

Klaus Kinski Bar

This tiny clubhouse type bar on a side-street in Neukolln is a perfect place to grab a drink and discuss your love for one of Germany’s greatest actors. It’s members only, but obtaining a membership only entails paying a small fee and signing a mailing list. The membership card they give you serves as a great souvenir. This, like many of the lounges and bars that line the streets is affordable and chic, a stereotypical Berlin mishmash of mid-century furniture, antique wallpapering and pretty lighting. They host a number of events and screenings and some of Berlin’s best DJs. This bar offers good opportunity to hobnob with the locals, if you are to be so bold.
Friedelstrasse 28

Gallerie Total

This hidden side-street gallery is a hub for many of Berlin’s artists and those interested in emergent art. The space, run by an eccentric and friendly man, hosts weekly Friday night openings and often has live music events. The gallery is extremely open to submission and guest curation which consequences in a wide variety of different art, each drawing a different crowd of people. There is something for everyone at this gallery and it is always bustling on a Friday night. A small section of the space is a tiny vintage junk shop, where one can go in and purchase a variety of oddball artifacts or simply chat with the owner about upcoming events. The music featured here is largely acoustic or folk with an experimental edge: the owner seems to have a great appreciation for the neighborhood and its talents. The space is open Tuesday through Friday 12-8 or by appointment.

Most visitors to Paris think the Latin quarter is only the myriad of tiny streets lined with kebab shops and Greek restaurants just to the south of Notre Dame. While this area may be fun to see (though I warn against eating here) there is much more to see of the real Latin Quarter. The district got its name thanks to the famous Sorbonne University and the many other religious institutions where only Latin was spoken. The area is still bustling with students, however the use of Latin met its end with the guillotine during the French revolution.

Here’s about an hour’s route to see some real treasures:

From Notre Dame Cathedral cross the River Seine to the south and you’ll see a little garden. A little further along on rue de la Bûcherie is Shakespeare & Company bookshop which is worth popping in. Don’t get lost upstairs and be sure to throw a coin in their mysterious well.

What I really think you should see is the church just behind the garden – Eglise St- Julien le Pauvre. This is one of the oldest churches of Paris, with parts of the current structure dating back to the mid 12th century. At one time, Sorbonne students took lessons here, but their rowdiness finally got them kicked out for good. Peek inside and you’ll find the surprising décor of what is now a Melkite Greek Catholic parish.

Just beside the church are some authentic medieval buildings, a rare site in today’s Paris. Turn right onto rue Galande and you’ll pass the Caveau des Oubliettes, one of the few free live music venues in the area. Everyone has to sit all snug down in the ‘cave’ – but it could be a good chance to meet some real locals.

Cross over the main street, rue du Petit Pont, and you’ll be at the back of Eglise St- Séverin. This Left Bank parish church might look older than Notre Dame due it’s dirty exterior, but most of it is in the late-gothic flamboyant style. Inside check out the beautiful stained glass windows and interesting curved pillars at the back. Once outside, walk along to it’s right side and you’ll see what used to be its medieval cloisters.

Keep going along that street which turns into rue Boutebrie. At number 14 you’ll find a cute little wine-bar called Porte-Pot which has a good selection of none-commercial French wines. Then you’ll come to the big Bvld St Germain, cross over and continue up the little street rue de Cluny. Follow it to the left and you’ll hit the Cluny Museum. This former townhouse of the Abbots of Cluny is one of the only examples of medieval civil buildings in Paris. A visit inside takes you back to the middle-ages, even back to Roman times as the old Roman baths are part of the museum.

The street heading up the hill, rue de la Sorbonne, of course leads to the Sorbonne University. It’s well worth having a look. From the outside you can also see the lovely sculpted façade of its chapel. You may want to stop your walk here with a drink in one of the charming cafes at Place de la Sorbonne or keep going up the hill and finish your walk at the Pantheon.

If you’re interested in knowing more about the area and medieval history, Context Travel Paris offers two intriguing walks in this area: Medieval Life and Society and Medieval Churches of Paris, which include some of the sites in this stroll.

Dreaming of a Italy vacation with your loved one? Here are some tips for spending a romantic day in Amalfi.

The Sun and Lasting Love

While Amalfi has several nice beaches, the peak of summer brings crowds of tourists and locals to soak up the warm, Mediterranean sun. Hop on one of the regular small boats servicing the nearby beach of Santa Croce for a more intimate experience. At this small beach, you can enjoy the clear sea, explore the rocky shoreline, and soak up the sun while enjoying a lazy lunch and a carafe of local white wine with peaches. Nearby is the famous “Arco Naturale,” a natural arch over the sea, where it is said that all who kiss while swimming underneath are assured a lasting love.

An Evening Stroll

Back in Amalfi, climb the ancient staircases high above the city, and enjoy the panorama of the city as the sun sets along the Amalfi Coast. Not only will you get a taste of local life (and some exercise climbing the stairs!), but you will also escape from the hustle and bustle of the town square. Before dinner, join the local Amalfitans for an evening passeggiata, or walk, along the port, and marvel at the lights of the city twinkling after dark.

A Romantic Dinner

Finish the evening at one of Amalfi’s romantic restaurants situated along the edge of the sea, such as Lo Smeraldino, or at the Hotel Luna restaurant located in a medieval watchtower overlooking the sea. At a table for two, with the sound of the sea, the lights on the water, and an incredible dinner, it is easy to understand why the Amalfi Coast continues to lure couples in search of a romantic vacation together.

There’s no need to have a Brigit Jones moment on February 14th in London. Say “no” to songs like All By Myself and a bottle of wine with the couch and “yes” to events that will make it easier to meet Mr or Mrs Right.

Speed date

The law of probability is an amazing thing, therefore the more single people you talk to, the more likely it is you will be lucky in love or find a good friend. For an evening with like-minded individuals or to match-make a pal, why not book an evening speed dating at Amuse Bouche in London on February 13th? Reserve a ticket on 020-7193-5325 for the venue, which is by Oxford Circus tube station in Soho on February 13th from 19:00.

Sky dive

Here’s an instructor who is guaranteed to fall for you – 10,000ft to be exact. Start Valentine’s Day with an adrenaline-fuelled sky dive. After the initial lesson, divers are taken up in a plane, strapped to an expert and sent into free fall for 15 seconds before a parachute takes the two of you to the ground. An exhilarating experience could be just what you need to get your dating confidence back on track. Check skydivelondon.co.uk for more.

Get out there

Two hot recommendations for girls and guys is Volupte burlesque show and the Adonis Cabaret. For booty-licious shows by temptresses like Dita Von Teese, stop off for a bite or cocktail a short walk from Chancery Lane tub station on Central Line to Norwich Street. Meanwhile, guests can gawp at the male models performing in the Adonis Cabaret at Club Aquarium on Old Street, which combines comedy and drag with strippers and drinks. Hunks who have appeared in Eastenders and the Graham Norton show perform acts like Carwash. Bring your swimming costume, there is a pool!

Be photographed

Get evidence of how gorgeous you are, by going into ID Studios in London for a makeover and photo shoot from £25. Feeling great does not come much cheaper than this. The price includes refreshments, skin toning, hair styling and make-up as well as an A4 print that you can show all of your mates or post on that dating website you have always been meaning to join. ID Studios also caters for groups, which would make this ideal experience for groups of singles. Visit www.newidexperiences.com to find out more.

Get pampered

There are a range of treatments available for ladies and gents in London this Valentine’s Day. Men can attend grooming sessions at GENT Salon for £70, which includes haircut, a manicure or a pedicure or visit Urban Rites for a goodie bag with and cleanse from just £28. Women can go for mud treatment at May Fair Spa in London from £60 or receive two treatments and a goodie bag worth £45 at the Intercontinental Spa in London for £99.

Whisk Valentines outside London on February 14th. Cupid’s arrow flies on a Saturday this year and these romantic city breaks are less than an hour’s train ride away from England’s capital.

Valentine on a Vespa

Valentines can go on a tour of the countryside around the English seaside town of Brighton on a Vespa scooter on February 14. Vroom hires out these retro modes of transport from £30. Visitors should not expect anything less in Brighton, which is widely regarded as the capital of alternative living in the UK. Aphrodisiac oysters and champagne are on offer at Riddle & Finns near the seafront, which provides romantic strolls. Couples can also see ballet Swan Lake this weekend at Theatre Royal Brighton from £25.

Pencil in Portsmouth

Lovers are urged to scrawl messages to their loved ones on the pavements in Portsmouth. The tourist office is leaving free chalk around the city for people to pen a message to those closest to their hearts. Take a sea of love tour with an expert in the love-lives of the underwater world at Portsmouth Aquarium, followed by fish and chips in the Aquarium cafe. For dessert, the Kings Theatre, is serving up stage version of the popular British film, the Full Monty, a comedy about unemployed steelworkers who turn to stripping to pay the bills.

Walk across fire

Would you walk across burning coals for your loved one? Oxford Castle’s Malmaison is offering couples the chance to prove themselves to their other halves on a Hot to Trot fire walk for Muscular Dystrophy on February 13th – see the charity website for details. Valentine’s Day activities are half the price this weekend in Oxford with discounts offered by First Great Western. There are two-for-one tickets for romantic settings such as Blenheim Palace and cut price cuisine for couples in top restaurants. Perhaps the Big Bang on Walton Street will have some special treats on February 14th during the Valentine’s Day Poetry Grand Slam.

Get on the boozy lowdown

Couples after a tipple before they topple can try Denbies Vineyard in Dorking, Surrey, which is offering half price admission over the Valentine’s weekend break. Tickets are two-for-one to a 360 degree cinema experience, which introduces tasters to the world of wine in the south-east of England. This is followed by a tour of the vineyards and lessons in grape growing, processing and bottling. Valentines are invited to enjoy a meal overlooking the fields in one of Denbies’ two restaurants after the excursion. Go to visitsurrey.com for details.

Paris is undeniably the romantic capital of France, if not Europe and the rest of the world. However, Lyon is full of enough cozy nooks to satisfy even the most ardent romantic.

If you’re in search of ways to impress your loved one, consider Lyon, and the following romantic spots:

A picnic at Parc de la Tête d’Or

The first stop on any lover’s getaway is the Parc de la Tete d’Or. Though teeming on weekends with a medley of families, couples, and errant rollerbladers, the park is massive enough to counterbalance the crowds. After an appropriately Victorian picnic under a tree, walk your lover over to the Zoo or Botanical Gardens. Although the Gardens offer more privacy, the Zoo is equally delightful and, as the only free zoo in France, well worth a visit.

A stroll through Vieux Lyon

On the other side of town, Vieux Lyon offers a different – though similarly crowded – romantic atmosphere. Stretching under St. John Cathedral, the winding, and conveniently cobble stoned streets, of Vieux Lyon lend themselves perfectly to hand holding. All night long, the endless restaurants and bars of Vieux Lyon fill up with starry-eyed couples curled up over a bottle (or two) of wine. (Avoid the noisier Irish pubs for a more intimate ambiance.)

A visit to Fourvière Theater

From Vieux Lyon, take the Funicular up to the nearby Fourviere Theater – a sprawling roman ruin looming over the city. An ideal picnic spot on sunny afternoons, the Theater also hosts periodic concerts of an impressive array of artists including Coldplay, Vanessa Paradis, and Massive Attack. However, since these tickets can be relatively expensive, take advantage of the quieter moments and spread out on a blanket with your girl or boyfriend. On weekends, the theater is fairly quiet and speckled with random students working on laptops and families exploring the ruins.

Enjoy views of Lyon from Mont d’Or

For a more intimate moment, far from the tourist hordes, take a detour into the 9eme arrondisement of Lyon. The neighborhoods of Mont d’Or are known for their upscale inhabitants and you’re sure to spot the latest BMW and Porche models. Even if you can’t afford the rent up here, the views from this corner of Lyon are free and incredible. The winding roads up to Mont d’Or offer picturesque views and give the sensation of being in the French mountainside (rather than one of it’s largest cities). Stop at the lookout point halfway up the mountain (with one road, its impossible to miss!) Here you’ll find superb views of Lyon (best enjoyed at sunset) – with few crowds, and easy accessibility, the spot is one of the best-kept and most romantic secrets of the city.

In the 1950’s, travel agents coined a phrase to describe the scenic byway that stretches from southern Germany into northern Austria – the Romantic Road (Austrian: Romantikstraße / German: Romantische Straße).

It is rich in culture and history and is a must-see destination when traveling in these regions. Meandering through a spectacular landscape filled with historical architecture and natural beauty, you will encounter such memorable attractions such as the renowned Neuschwanstein Castle along this route.

The portion of the Romantic Road that lies within Austria’s boundaries travels between two major tourist destinations – Salzburg and Vienna – including all the culture and scenery that you encounter along your adventure. The ideal vacation for lovers or honeymooners awaits you in this country that is renowned for its beautiful mountainous landscapes and winter sports events. The many cabins and chalets at the various mountain resorts, the history, and the culture – all of this spells the epitome of a romantic holiday or vacation. The following 4 destinations are the most recommended ones for a romantic holiday or vacation when visiting Switzerland.

1. Arosa

Arosa is less costly than St. Moritz, but it is slightly less elegant as well. It is nearly the highest elevation (1,800m/5,904 ft.) ski resort in Switzerland. But make no mistake about it. You may want to consider planning your romantic getaway during the summer months when the network of hiking trails meander up the mountainside to the lush forests and the numerous small lakes. When the hiking tires you out there are a variety of cable cars that can transport you and your significant other up to those alpine heights and the dynamic scenery.

2. Gstaad

Gstaad is one of Europe’s winter capitals in the glitterati and lies at the 4-way junction of alpine valleys about half way from the Bernese Oberland and the Vaud Alps. If it’s excellent skiing and high style that you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. All of the hotels in Gstaad seem have cozy, warm bedrooms, fireplaces, and plenty of Schnapps to set a romantic mood, so you don’t have to break your budget finding lodging to equate to your needs.

3. Mürren

Mürren is so isolated (not a bad thing) and the only access is either by cable car or the cog railway. It is situated on a rocky, higher-elevation ledge perched hundreds of feet above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. There is a smattering of chalet-type hotels here for what has proven to be very cost-effective lodging. Additionally, there are exceptional hiking and skiing trails as well as the spectacular panoramas over the Bernese Oberland Mountains.

4. Verbier

Ringed with fabulous ski slopes, Verbier (Four Valleys ski area) is one of the most romantic settings anywhere in Switzerland, sitting at the bottom of an immense alpine bowl ringed with hiking and skiing trails. Despite the fact that Verbier entertains many English-speaking visitors, it is unmistakably French and the atmosphere is very unpretentious as well. There is no end to the fun that you can have here in this mountain setting, and whether or not you brought your own romance with you or not, you’re apt to find it in Verbier and enjoy every moment of your stay in one of the romantic chalets.
