The city of Dublin is Ireland’s capital and largest city and is also one of the leading vacation destinations in all of Europe. Ptolemy, the famous astronomer and cartographer of ancient Greece, was the first person to ever make a reference to inhabitants in the Dublin area. The evidence dates back to 140 AD and the settlement was referred to in Ptolemy’s writing as Eblana Civitas”. Dublin is also referred to as the “Town of the Hurdled Ford” by many of the locals.

As we jumped on our flight from Pisa to Palermo, I had high expectations of our whistle stop tour around Sicily. Following the advice from my Italian students, we were hiring a car and travelling around from Palermo to Taormina to Syracuse and finally stopping off at Cefalù before heading back to Palermo. We had already heard so much about the delights the island has to offer, and Sicily more than delivered. In fact we fell in love with the place!

Sicily vacation

Today tourists have so many options when it comes to places to go and things to see, so once I have visited somewhere, even if I really like it, I don’t tend to hurry back, as there is always somewhere different I want to see first. For Sicily, I will more than happily break this rule. In fact, I can’t wait to go back. And here’s why: read full article

There are increasing signs that the bureaucratic and unwieldy visa regime, which currently keeps the number of visitors to Russia artificially low, will soon be modified or removed, at least for citizens of Schengen countries. This means that Moscow will become a destination in much more demand, especially for weekend breaks in a city steeped with history, culture and a huge amount of vodka.

Housing many sight-seeing spots and brimming with celebrated cuisine, Athens spoils the tourists with its wide choices. A single day in Athens is practically not sufficient to explore the city; however, once you get a chance, you will never want to miss the highlights.

I started an exciting day in Athens quite early on, watching the beautiful sunrise behind the Athens Marble Stadium, best known to be where the famous Olympic Games were revived. A relaxed stroll under the enchanting tree line was a perfect start to the eventful day ahead. read full article

Istanbul is a tale of two cities. Straddling Europe and Asia and divided by the strait of Bosporus, the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires is the only metropolitan city that has its foot on two continents, with the old city sprawled over European territory and the modern, residential areas established on the Asian side. Considering its massive size, a timeframe of 24 hours can hardly do any of the city’s gems any justice at all, but it is sufficient to scratch the surface and instill a curiosity for more. It is an enchanting city, fusing the history of several cultures, languages, religions, and eras together and establishing itself as Turkey’s economic and cultural epicenter.

Berlin is one huge historical site. This city has seen it all, and the grand events which took place here have left powerful marks. Reminders of the second world war are everywhere, such as the still visible holes in the walls – results of machine gun fire – or the empty lots scattering the city centre, where houses were once bombed away in the Allied air raids in search of snipers.

An ever-present piece of history is naturally the Berlin Wall. It pops up every here and there, but perhaps the most visited location to have a look at this once so dreaded piece of concrete is the East Side Gallery, which runs along the bank of the river Spree between areas

Are you planning to visit Florence in Italy, the cradle of the renaissance? Ponte Vecchio is one of the biggest Florentine attractions which you cannot miss. Find out more about its history before your travel.

florence: ponte vecchio

Ponte Vecchio means in Italian “old bridge”. The bridge is the oldest and most famous of six Florence’s bridges over the Arno river. There are actually buildings on this medieval bridge which, since the 15th century, are occupied by jewelery shops. In the center of the bridge there are two panoramatic terraces facing both up and down the river. These offer a splendid view over the Arno. The bridge is mentioned in the famous aria “O mio Babbino Caro” from the Opera “Gianni Schiacchi“, by Giacomo Puccini. read full article

Naples is synonymous with presepe or Nativity scenes. From the big cathedrals to public squares right down to the small houses – there’s hardly any place where you wouldn’t find one! Setting up a nativity scene is a source of great pride for these Italians and is an art that is passed on from generation to generation. The nativity scene is said to have been first created by St Francis of Assisi in 1223 when he conducted a Christmas mass in the town of Greccio. It is usually set up around December 8th and continues right up to epiphany on January 6th.
