For those who have not been to Cannes, they may have an impression that the only interesting event this coastal city has is the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival.

While it is true that Cannes came to fame because of this glamorous event, the gorgeous city of Cannes has more to offer besides beautiful people, posh neighborhoods, and the glitz and glamour of the movie industry.

1. The Enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask

Probably the most famous historical site within Cannes is the island fortress prison of Île Sainte-Marguerite. Just a 15-minute ferry ride from the main city, you may tour the very cell where the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask spent 11 years of his isolated life. Another fact: itching for more history? Another attraction on the island is the Musée de la Mer or Museum of the Sea in English. Be amazed at archaeological finds including shipwrecks and Roman and Saracen artifacts.

2. Underwater exploration with the “Nautilus”

Okay, this is not exactly the Nautilus from the Jules Verne classic but they work just the same! Discover and take a glimpse of what it’s like under the waters of Cannes from a glass-bottomed boat named… you guessed it right; the Nautilus! The boat departs every hour and is only available during summer.

3. Nudist Beach for the Happy and Gay

Go Au Naturel at the Plage de la Batterie. This quiet and sandy beach is ideal for gay couples or anyone who wants to break free from the restraints of clothing to get an even tan. Fast fact: The Plage de la Batterie is one of the best beaches in southern France. During summer, families flock to the said beach. Please be informed that by families, I also mean kids, young adults and minors.

4. Shop Like you’re in Beverly Hills

Coined as the “Sister City of Beverly Hills”, Cannes is the commerce and activity center of the French Riviera. Walk along Cannes’ most famous avenues: the Boulevard de la Croisette where luxury hotels, chic bars and fancy restaurants line the street; and the Rue d’Antibes for an upscale shopping experience. Fun Fact: You can find Palais des Festivals along Boulevard de la Croisette, the location of the world-renowned Cannes International Film Festival.

5. Get to See the Real France in Cannes

Visit the best food market in Cannes, (except Monday) the Marche Forville, to learn why France is the gastronomic capital of the world. Local farmers of Cannes sell their goods here such as fresh vegetables, fish, cold meats, fresh pasta, cheese, and flowers. Another fact: Interested to buy vintage paintings, jewelries, and books? You’re in luck! The Forville food market becomes a flea market called Marché Brocante on Mondays where you can find all sorts of antique stuff.

On the east coast of Italy in the region of Emilia Romagna there is a beach town that would impress even the most hardcore party orientated travelers.

The town of Rimini is just about 1 hour south east of Bologna and is easy to access by train or automobile.

Rimini Landmarks

The city of Rimini is the king of beach towns. With one of the biggest lengths of beach in Europe, it is definitely a great place to spend a weekend. This town isn’t just famous for it’s beach it also is home to some very historical monuments. At the entrance to the city you will see the Arch of Augustus as it leads you to the town center, the arch was built in 27 BC. At the opposite side of Rimini’s center you will cross over The Tiberius Bridge, this roman designed bridge over the Marecchia River was commissioned by Emperor Augustus in 14 BC and was finished under the reign of Tiberius in 21 BC. The bridge joins the city center with the more historic downtown of Borgo San Giuliano.

Rimini Food and Restaurants

Rimini was known traditionally as a fishing town, and today you can find many seafood restaurants that still carry on that tradition, especially in the small curving streets of Borgo San Guiliano. One of the first things you need to do when you arrive in Rimini is; of course, eat! Every region has it’s own special dishes and tastes and Emilia Romagna is one of my favorites. With reasonable prices and great portions it is one of the best regions to pull up a seat around a table.

If you don’t have time to tuck into a giant slab of lasagna or a small mountain of tagliatella then you should try Rimini’s own fast food: Cassoni. Cassoni is in the same style as a calzone but with a slightly different assembly. The outside wrap is always the same and is a staple food for Emilia Romagna: piadina. Piadina is a type of tortilla shaped soft bread made with the simple ingredients of salt, flour, lard, and water (or olive oil). When it encloses a mixture of your choice, including herbs, meats, and cheeses (my favorite being the classic tomato and mozzarella combo) it becomes cassoni. This food has all three essentials: it’s cheap, delicious, and easy to take away to the beach. Rimini is filled with Piadinerias (look for the sign “Piade & Cassoni”).

Rimini Beach and Nightlife

The area along the beach is crowded with hotels, giving you a great diversity in prices and sleeping arrangements. At night the beach is a very different place. Bars and clubs open into the streets as thirsty crowds move up and down the coast looking for a drink. A favorite pub of many is the Rose and Crown, a traditional English pub opened in 1964; it is famous for its live music, seaside terrace, and frosty beers. Located across from the beach near Piazza Marvelli (#2 Viale Regina Elena) Rose and Crown is a great place to have a drink and some pub grub. I would recommend the very popular “giraffe,” a long necked two liter personal tap that is transported straight to your table. You won’t have to worry about flagging down a waiter or making pilgrimages to the bar with your handy giraffe tap sitting near you. After a long night of drinking it isn’t unusual to see a few people jumping into the water to freshen back up…

There’s nothing like the warm and enchanting Mediterranean.

It’s as though Europe has its own private swimming pool. If you squint at the map then you might just see the outline of an elephant. The trunk taking you to Gibraltar, the ears being the island of Sardinia and Corsica and the eye being Mallorca. But where should you head to swim in the sea that is called “the middle of the land”?

1. Bol on the island of Brac, Croatia.

Brac is a stunning island off the coast of Croatia that boasts some beautiful historical buildings, some bankable hot and sunny summer weather and some of the clearest blue waters you’ll find. It’s no huge surprise to see how big the tourism has become on the island. There’s a very active nightlife and lots to see and do, including various levels of water sports. But this is about swimming in the Med so let’s focus on that. The southern waves and the north-easterly wind provide a cool breeze amidst the baking mid-summer heats which get well into the 30s. The Zlatni rat aka Golden Horn is something you have to see to believe. It’s a beach that looks like a capital V, jutting out of the land covered in sand.

Top Beach Hotel on the Island of Brac: Villa Adriatica Hotel, Supetar

2. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia.

These coves will have you thinking you’re in a film. They certainly won’t let you leave them in a hurry. The Emerald Coast is one of the least talked about romantic spots in Europe and somewhere you should all think about picking for this year’s beach holiday. It’s a 30 km square area off the north of Sardinia and is basked in white sand and random rocky bays with warm turquoise waters perfect for lying back for hours on end. One of the most popular beaches is Liscia Ruja but you won’t struggle to find somewhere less busy.

Top Beach Hotel in Costa Smeralda: Grand Hotel, Porto Cervo

3. Terracina, Italy

Another one few people know much about, this is a huge stretch of beach near the small town of Terracina, on the east coast of Italy about an hour and a half south from Rome on the way to Naples. It’s a very popular place for Romans to go for the day in the summer months but don’t let that put you off because there’s a lot of room there for everyone. It does get busy but if you’re looking for somewhere to swim with the family then this is a great place without the hoards of tourists from all over Europe. The waters are calm and warm and the weather is just about right for most of the year.

Top beach Hotel in Terracina, Italy: Hotel Torre del Sole

4. Paradise Bay, Malta

If you’re looking for a private swim with just you and a loved one then this beach in northern Malta might be just the thing for you. You wouldn’t find this beach unless you knew about it or were extremely lucky. Head to the tip of the island just round the corner from Cirkewwa harbour. You might find you have to put your belongings in a rucksack as you descend an old stone flight of steps in order to reach the secluded beach. It’s calm and warm and perfect for a dip without disturbance.

Dear Travel Agony Aunt, We are a family of six, two adults four children. Have a villa already booked but require two overnight stops in northern sardinia. We just need somewhere basic and nice and cheap can you advise? Teresa, from Cardiff

Dear Teresa,

Responding to your question about Sardinia family vacations, you could consider staying, Eastwards from Western Sardinia, in Sassari, Castelsardo, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Palau, Golfo Aranci and Olbia.

Sassari is a culturally-rich city with a lot of interesting sites, good restaurants where to eat the traditional Sardininan cuisine and close to beautiful Sardinia beaches. Il Vialetto di Sassari will offer you cosy rooms and budget accommodation in double and triple rooms.

The medieval city of Castelsardo offers you a number of excellent restaurants with seafruit dishes as well as good beaches. Hotel Riviera- Ristorante Fofò will welcome you in 4-star modern double and triple rooms.

Santa Teresa di Gallura is one of the most beautiful places in the North. This little city is located on a headland only 11 miles far from the Southern Corsica Coast. If you would linke to stay alltogether in an apartment than can host up to 6 people, La Contessa is a good choice for you. Otherwise, Méta Hotel near the center, the tourist habour and 1 km far from the Rena Bianca beach.

Palau is located near the famous Costa Smeralda in Western Sardinia. Hotel Piccada offers large apartments for up to 6 people. Hotel For You, in Olbia, offers Emerald Coast accommodation in fully supplied air-conditioned hotel rooms.

Golfo Aranci is set in a 15-minutes-drive from Olbia and 5-minutes-drive from Porto Rotondo, and boasts wonderful beaches well-known for its clean waters. Sardinia Blu consists of a number of accommodations ranging from one-room to three-room apartments.

The sun can be relentless in the summer months here in Rome.

With everyone looking for a place to lay their beach towel it can become quite difficult to find the perfect spot. In my search for a strip of sand I wandered into the town of Sperlonga.

Sperlonga is just one hour south of Rome by trail and is very easily accessible. After a short bus ride from Sperlonga’s train station (Fondi-Sperlonga) I was dropped into the middle of this charming little town. The first thing that I noticed was that Sperlonga resembled Greece more than Italy; with it’s small alleys and stacked sun bleached buildings layered with balconies overlooking stretches of sea.

After a short walk through town I heard the shore calling me. I swiftly strolled down the zigzagging stairways past the sun bathing cats and made my way to the beach. Once I reached the sand I started scanning the prices for umbrella and beach chair rentals. Sperlonga does have public sections of beach but I would really recommend renting an umbrella; the sun can be very cruel and during midday it can be dangerous staying in direct sun. Sperlonga has an amazing beach; and they know it, you will be paying an average of sixteen euro for two lounge chairs and an umbrella (depending on how near to the water you want to be positioned). I paid twelve euro for two chairs with an umbrella in the back row; it was a mad dash on burning hot sand to get into the water but definitely worth saving five euro.

The sea was perfect, the water was clean and as clear as glass. From the coast you have a great view no matter where you look; whether up at the white hilltop town or out at the waves lapping in from the sparkling sea. I do have a few warnings though, mainly for your wallet. This town is beautiful but small, that means a bit on the expensive side. I would suggest buying all of your supplies before leaving Rome, packing a lunch and using the spare cash on something cold to drink on the beach.

A train for Sperlonga leaves every hour from Termini station (Rome) and costs €6,50 for a one-way ticket; when you arrive at the Fondi-Sperlonga station their will be a shuttle bus waiting to take you into town (€1 per one-way trip). That shuttle runs between the town and train station every hour all day; making it easy to get into and out of town. You really can’t beat this town; with it’s clean stretch of sand and sea and beautiful hilltop views. If you need a place to get away and cool off make your way towards Speronga.

Dubai’s extreme temperatures in summer with record humidity and very low wind may be rather off-putting for even the most hardened water sport fanatic, although for the other 7-8 months of the year, it’s quite bearable and can even be a little cold for beach activities, but more or less it’s ideal. Unfortunately, due to massive population increase and development by the waterfront, the sea surrounding Dubai is no longer as pristine as it once was. However, that doesn’t stop there being a plethora of exciting beach things here to accompany your holiday

.

Surfing/Wind Surfing/ Kite Surfing in Dubai

Dubai has a fairly active surfing community, and although the waves are nothing to write home about, they may be suitable for beginners. Wind Surfing is also practiced, with ample facilities available. Kite Surfing is more popular than the other two, with many clubs and a beach allocated by the authorities for this. The beach hotels are the most advisable places to stay, both for the view, activities, and relative solitude.

Yachting in Dubai

Dubai’s many rich visitors and residents own and rent Yachts, and with marinas and places to “park” them, it’s become a very popular past time. There are around 5 Yacht hire companies that hire out luxury yachts, as well as many facilities for those who own Yachts and are just stopping over. The Festival Marina, at the end of Dubai’s creek, has a Venetian theme, 74 permanent berths for Yachts, and an outdoor artificial canal and many poolside restaurants and cafes, all attached to a luxurious, well-designed shopping mall.

Jet Skiing in Dubai

With so many super-tall skyscrapers such as the Burj Dubai and the Burj al Arab, Jet Skiing is another popular sport, and will cost about €20 for a half hour. With such a high turnover, the Jet Skis offered will be some of the latest models of brands such as Yamaha and Kawasaki. It’s quite safe as well as there are very few rocky crags which so many inexperienced Jet Skiers dash themselves to pieces on if not cautious. Be careful also where you Ski, as it’s banned in some areas.

Scuba Diving in Dubai

With much ocean wildlife and water temperatures averaging about 24°C during the cooler months, Dubai is a well known spot among Scuba divers. Additional places to dive with even more promising sights exist around the coastline in other Emirates such as Fujairah, and it’s even possible (with a hired car) to visit the Musandam Peninsula, a tiny, rocky portion of Oman, where the waters are so clear and unpolluted that sting rays and numerous other forms of wildlife are visible 10 metres from the surface. It will take about three and a half hours to drive to Musandam, and about €6 for a tourist visa, but it’s absolutely recommended for scuba diving fans for its solitary, untouched beauty.

Dear Travel Agony Aunt, We are travelling to Europe for three weeks in July with our three children ages 20, 18, 14. We are trying to choose between Italy and Spain for the last 8 days. Near the water, nightlife for the older ones (and us a bit) and swimming and watersports for all of us. Any suggestions? We have come up with Tossa de Mar in Spain and then Barcelona. Or Santa Margherita in Italy followed by Florence. Price is a consideration. Help.
Sue, from Asutralia

Dear Sue,

If what you are looking for is swimming, watersports, fun and nightlife for all the family, I’d say Spain is the ideal choice for you, taking into account that it will be easier to find budget accommodation, as well as affordable prices for nightlife, eating and car rental.

As you said, one of the places worth-visiting is Tossa de Mar, where you will find family-friendly hotels with halfboard formula that will surely fulfill your needs. Tossa de Mar is also home of stunning beaches offering a lot of watersports such as canoeing, waterskiing, scuba diving and boat diving. In Cala Llevadó beach, a family activity program is also available.

Lloret de Mar could also be good for all the family. Lloret is famous for its nightlife and blue-flagged beaches with pedalos, waterski and jetski activities. From Lloret de Mar, you can easily get to both Tossa de Mar and Malgrat de Mar by car or by bus for a day out.

Salou is another spot to consider. This beautiful town southwards from Barcelona, offers large beaches, a lot of bars, cafés, pubs and discos. The ruta del cava (Sparkling Catalan wine route) is also one of the activities to do in the vicinities. PortAventura theme-park can provide at least two funny days to all of the family. Aqua park and the go-cart track, both located in the nearby La Pineda, where you can also find famous Pacha disco.

The Canary Islands is a pearl that took birth in the very heart of the Atlantic Ocean.

Rising from the ocean crust in the Jurassic period these volcanic islands rose to the surface over the next many eras. The seven major islands together are a part of the Macaronesia eco-region so while vacationing in the Canary Islands; you can view some of the most unique geo-biography anywhere in the world.

From the thrill of watching exotic birds and plants to experiencing a, very rare in modern Europe, camel ride through the sand dunes a vacation here will be truly memorable. The islands do not only offer the exotic and the atypical though. There are beautiful beaches, great hiking trails, golf resorts, the best sea food restaurants that serve authentic Canarian cuisine and just so much more. With every island so different from the other this is definitely a vacation for every member of the family, irrespective of their personality and their likes and dislikes.

Tenerife

In this one island alone you can enjoy two completely diverse climates. The North of the mountain range that almost perfectly bisects the island, feels like a tropical paradise. Palm trees sway in the cool breeze as the smell of banana trees permeate everything. The southern half is an arid desert. Mount Teide with its volcanic crater is the highest volcano in the world outside of Hawaii. A cable car ride to the top of this crater and across offers a breathtaking sight. From the ‘Noses of Teide’ which are lava formations on Mount Teide to volcanic sand beaches to the man-made golden beach of Playa de Las Teresitas the things to see are many. Though more for those really comfortable in their walking shoes, a unique geographical feature is, what is known as, Paisaje Lunar or the lunar landscape.

When you have had enough of nature, though that is very difficult here, head to the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for some great architectural examples, be it homes, offices or churches. The step Pyramids at Güimar had been dismissed by many but are now accepted as authentic pyramids built along the same principles as their more famous counterparts.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is another one of the Canary Islands that is again a continent in miniature. From snow capped peaks to sunny beaches. Its capital Las Palmas is the most vibrant city in the Islands. History, architecture and shopping are all at their best here. Columbus’ house before his exploration of the New World is now a museum and a great place to visit. There is also a vibrant restaurant and night life. From bustling capital to the idyllic Canarian city of Teror, this is the best place to relax any jagged nerves. With a church dating back to the eighteenth century, typical wooden balconies everywhere and a Sunday market that almost brings the entire island to this city No tourist should miss a visit here. The Cruz de Tejeda is another popular tourist destination.

Aside from crystal clear Atlantic waters and pristine beaches, Costa de La Luz has lots more to offer:

1. No Fish and Chips Here

Simple, rural, and laid-back -This is how locals describe the way of life in Costa de La Luz. Everything is cheaper: the food, cost of living, and even land properties. Lots of tourists from nearby European countries such as the UK and Germany permanently move to neighboring Spain and into Costa de La Luz to experience a simple life closer to nature. I wouldn’t be surprised if you choose Costa de La Luz to be your future home!

2. A Great Place to Discover One’s Self

The slow pace of life and serene environment in Tarifa, the southernmost coastal city of Spain along Costa de La Luz attracts artists, hippies, surfers, and bohemians. This makes Tarifa a cultural melting pot which seem to create a free-spirited culture all of its own.

3. Best Seafood in Spain

According to gourmets, the best sea foods come from the Atlantic Ocean. This is true for the local fish markets at Costa de La Luz offers a wide variety of freshly caught sumptuous sea foods. Indulge yourself to delicious Mediterranean and Spanish dishes while sipping dry white wine surrounded by the rhythmic sound of the sea. Simply relaxing, isn’t it?

4. Celebrate, Study, and Explore In Paradise

The port province of Cádiz in Costa de La Luz has been occupied by the largest empires in history so it’s literally filled with historic places. Be sure not to miss the colorful and crazy Cadiz Carnival Andalucia held every February. Also a University City, you might want to check out the Universidad de Cádiz which specializes in medicine and marine sciences.

5. It’s all natural

Also located in Cadiz Province is the small seaside village of Los Caños de Meca. The little modern development makes it a mecca for nudists from all over Europe. Not only that; the unspoiled natural wonders and open spaces make the eastern part of Los Caños de Meca an ideal camping and hiking spot.

Photo of Cabo de Trafalgar on Costa de la Luz, Spain, by J. Guterriez

The Black Sea forms a natural eastern border for Bulgaria and makes it the home of some of the finest seaside resorts in Europe.

The largest of all of them is Varna, the sea capital of Bulgaria also sometimes referred to as Bulgaria’s summer capital. The headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy is situated in this city. Descending from ever so green plateau terraces to the bay that is shaped like a horseshoe Varna is an around-the-year tourist destination. From being rich in natural beauty to being choc-a-bloc with monuments and museums of social and cultural interests, Varna is also a city with much historical significance.

Varna, the historical city

One of the oldest cities in not just Bulgaria but all of Europe, Varna dates back to sometime in the fifth millennium BCE. From being the Greek established city of Odessus, it has been Thracian, Macedonian, and Roman in subsequent years till it became a part of Bulgaria after the Treaty of Berlin.

The earliest settlement here was pre-historic as evident from the Varna Necropolis, one of the most important archeological sites originally belonging to the pre-historic world. The graves found here date back to the Eneolithic era. The excavation of graves has also revealed some of the world’s oldest gold and bronze.

The ruins of old basilicas and monasteries in the city reveal that Varna was a historic Christian center. Marine charts from fourteenth century Italy mention Varna as being the most important sea port on the route from Constantinople to the Danube Delta. The last major recorded battle of the European Crusades is the Battle of Varna in 1444. The fall of Constantinople was inevitable after the Crusade of Varna failed. With such history to boast of, old architecture and magnificent ruins merge everywhere with modern buildings.

Varna, the sea resort

Dotted with beautiful beaches Varna is one of the most popular summer resorts in Bulgaria. In the summer months it is sunny almost eleven hours a day making it ideal for sunbathers. The sea is also very calm with hardly any turbulence. The moderate climate, secure from the coldness of the Baltic wind and the heat of summer Riviera, makes sure that the beach and the water are both always the right temperature.

There are several hot sulfur springs along the beach that are used as spas and mineral baths. The twelve mineral springs in Varna have made sure that it is not only a recreational destination but a region of importance for those seeking healing prophylaxis. Mud from the Firth Lake in Varna also has prophylactic properties.

The Asparuhov Bridge that spans over the canals that crisscross between the Black Sea and Lake Varna is a popular destination for all extreme sports enthusiasts being a great location for bungee jumping. With the sun and beaches providing mental relaxation and the spas and mineral springs taking care of all physical problems, Varna is a complete therapeutic holiday destination if ever there was one. And the charm passes well beyond the beaches to permeate the entire city.

What to see and do in Varna

The Roman Thermae is the largest Roman archeological find in Bulgaria and dates back to the second century. It is, in fact, the third largest Roman ruin in Europe. Very little of the original structure remains today. The Varna Archeological Museum is the largest museum in Varna. It holds displays ranging from the pre-historic period to the Bulgarian National Revival period and includes Thracian, Greek, Roman, and Ottoman artifacts. Probably its most popular exhibit is the oldest gold treasure in the world known as the Gold of Varna.

The Aldazha monastery situated north of central Varna is a Christian Cave Monastery belonging to the medieval period. The grotto is a part of the Golden Sands Natural Park.

The Sea Garden is the largest park in Varna and includes a fabulous aquarium, dolphinarium, planetarium, zoo and the Museum of Natural History among other attractions. Bronze statues of famous Bulgarians decorate the National Revival Alley. There are also two open air theatres which is the venue of several operatic and theatrical performances and of the International Ballet Competition. The Garden has been declared to be a national monument of landscape architecture.

Pobiti Kamani is a natural rock phenomenon just west of Varna which are hollow stone columns filled with sand.

There are several old churches and cathedrals in Varna including the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin which has the Bishop’s throne and an intricately carved iconostasis, and the Archangel Michael chapel which is the site of the first Bulgarian secular school. There is also a Buddhist center and two old mosques belonging to the Ottoman period. Together they reveal the colorful past, and, probably, the more colorful present of Varna, the sea capital of Europe.

Magical describes this great getaway location. If you are at a lost for the best summer holiday destination for 2009 do not look any further.

The Mykonos Islands, Greece, are like a rare and beguiling jewel consisting of a wealth of culture and beautiful merging into a melting pot of lush landscape and golden beaches. The sandy beaches of Cyclades are in fact some of the most golden beaches in the regions. The sophistication of the Mykonos Islands only but enhances the attraction of this Greek holiday spot. Noted as being one of the most famously known islands in Greece, Mykonos will simply take your breath away.

Take the time to discover the neighboring island of Delos which is one of the most historical areas of Ancient Greece. In fact the Delos is a very small island at the heart of the Cyclades. The historical significance of the Delos makes this a superb location to explore dating back to the days of the Greek god of light called Apollo and Artemis, the goddess of hunting. The name Cyclades comes from the unique formation of near by islands to the Delos Island which begun to appear in circular configuration. The islands date as far back as the 3rd millennium B.C.

One of the islands most famous aspects and point of mention are the beaches. In two words golden and translucent best describe the beach experience waiting for you when you touch down at the airport of this glorious island. The closest beach to Mykonos town center is known as Agios Stefanos. Located on the north side, expect this beach to be one of the more overcrowded beaches due to its close proximately. Some of the facilities you will find at this beach include plenty of water sports and activities.

For the most popular beach you will definitely want to try the Platis Gialos. Local buses provide transportation to this beach for easy access and convenience. This beach can be described as golden sand with eye catching “turquoise” clear waters. Here you can also partake of an assortment of water sports activities along the shore. Water sports activities are available on almost every beach and are a large part to the island’s beach going experience. So, do expect them to be present on almost every beach in the region. This is great news for those who are aficionados in the way of all this water sport or water activity.

But, if you are in search of sandy white beaches and coves, the Agios Ioannis will mesmerize you with a collection of small coves especially available to the general public. This beach is quite the famous location for feature films such as “Shirley Valentine.” This beach is located on the west side of the island with an outlook of the Delos Island. It is said to be both relaxing and calming at the same time in comparison to the other numerous beach locations. General access to the beach is provided by way of a local bus service.

Located in the northern Tuscany region between the Cinquale River and the Lake of Massaciuccoli is Versilia, Italy. The area is one of the more popular destinations along the Italian Riviera and is well known for its fine sandy beaches, as well as being served by over 425 bathing establishments, 600 hotels, and numerous open beaches. Versilia is known for its mild climate due in large part to the Apuan Alps which forms a bulwark to the region and keeps the climate very seasonable. On the average, Versilia sees at least 270 days of sunshine every year.

Though Italy is held as a key destination for lovers looking to take in a romantic getaway, there is no lack for kid-friendly places in Versilia and families have come back from a wonderful stay in the region on numerous occasions. Here is a list of some of the more commonly frequented spots for families with children to take in while visiting this beautiful area in the Tuscany countryside.

Marina Di Pietrasanta (Coast of Tuscany)

With the Marble Mountains posing as a formidable backdrop for perfect picture postcard scenery, this coastal Tuscany region is one of the most visited beach areas in Italy. Surprisingly, it is not overcrowded due to the fact that Marina Di Pietrasanta is where the Florentines and Milanese spend their summers by the sea and they fight commercialization attempts tooth and nail. It is one of Italy’s better kept secrets, but tourists are still welcome and both children and teenagers alike can quickly make friends with the locals.

Pietrasanta

The mountains and the sea combine beautifully here in this small medieval town that straddles the Apuan Alps’ lush foothills. The town’s Roman origins are depicted by the Roman wall of which part of its remains are still standing. Both artists and sculptors the world over are drawn to the cultural hub that Pietrasanta is in the community. Artist studios are intermingled with the small elegant shops displaying their wooden shutters and ochre-washed walls deep within the alleyways that form the Piazza del Duomo.

Forte Dei Marmi

Known as the ‘Marble Fort‘ and located just over 1 mile from Marina Di Pietrasanta, Forte Dei Marmi shares the identical stretch of golden beaches and the spectacular backdrop created by the Apuan Alps. Despite its flair for the elegant and being extremely low key, this is acknowledged by many Italians as being one of the most chic and prestigious Italian beach resorts. Established around the turn of the century, this was one of the first bathing beaches in the region and was continually frequented by Royalty from all over Europe. Designer shops, sophisticated pavement cafes, and world famous restaurants abound for the tourist.

Whether it’s golden sand or rocky lagoons, Athens, Greece, has a nearby coastline with wide variety of beaches within a relatively short distance from the center of the city.

All of the beaches near Athens get extremely busy during the months of May through July and even the more expensive bungalows and resort hotels need to be booked far in advance. Be aware that most of these beaches are “private”, meaning that you will have to pay an entrance fee to enjoy swimming.

The best beaches are located along the south-east coast in the Glyfada district, and the beaches north-east of the city near the Marathon district are very peaceful. You can also find some nice beaches along Athens’ east coast near Rafina, a smaller seaport near the city. However, most of the time, these beaches are very crowded.

The following is a list of the top 8 recommended beaches near Athens including the distance to them from the center of the city.

Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands that is located just 125 kms of the coast of Africa.

Like all the other Canary islands Lanzarote is also volcanic in character. In fact its crater filled landscape island has often been described as being ‘lunar-like’ or ‘Martian’ in appearance. The dry climate of the island has perfectly preserved the lava fields that were created here after a series of long explosions that rocked the island from 1730 to 1736. Since these explosions were one of the longest recorded explosions in history, the island is also referred to as the ‘Fire Island’. While this rugged volcanic landscape dominates the southern part of Lanzarote, the northern part of the island is oddly verdant covered as it is with lush, green valleys.

Lanzarote is a favorite with holiday makers who flock here to enjoy its year round temperate climate, where temperatures rarely dip below 22ºC (72ºF). To cater to all these tourists, are a number of resorts have developed all over the island with the most popular ones being Costa Teguise, Matagorda, Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca. However tourists on Lanzarote don’t just head out to the island for its resorts and amiable weather, they also go to take in its many fascinating attractions. The UN in fact declared the entire island as a Biosphere in 1993 due to presence of various enchanting spots most of which have been created by nature.

1. Relax on the splendid Lanzarote Beaches

Lanzarote has a wide array of contrasting beaches which range from the white sand beaches of Orzola in the north and Papagayo in the south to the golden sands of the resort town of Puerto Del Carmen and the black sand beach at Playa Quemada. Many of Lanzarote’s beaches like Playa Chica, Famara , La Santa and Las Cucharas are also hubs of water based recreational activities like diving, wind surfing, jet skiing, parasailing and body boarding.

2. Take a Tour of Timanfaya National Park

The Timanfaya National Park is a man-made park which contains the famed Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) which were created when more than 100 volcanoes erupted on the island in the mid 18th century. The last of these explosions took place in 1824 and in 1968 the entire area with its perfectly conserved lava fields was declared as a national park. However you cannot just walk around the volcanoes that are located within this national park but have to tour them aboard a coach or on the back of a camel. The guided coach tour of the volcanoes is included in your admission fee of eight Euros which you pay to get access to the park. The park also has within its environs more than 180 species of rare plants and a restaurant called ‘El Diablo’ where you can enjoy local cuisine which is cooked for you using the geothermal heat that emanates from the geysers of the lava field.

3. Take an Excursion to La Cueva de los Verdes

This network of underground caves is located near the Monte de la Corona in the northern part of Lanzarote. This strange formation was also formed by intense volcanic activity which took place nearly five thousand years ago on the island when massive lava flows streamed into the sea and hardened in places which were inflated by gases. These underground caves stretch for over four miles though only those that extend over a mile are accessible to visitors. The caves are suitably illuminated to highlight their unique features.

4. Visit the Jameos del Agua

The Jameos del Agua is a part of the seven km long volcanic tunnel known that contains the Cueve dos los Verdes. This volcanic tunnel which was formed by the flowing of molten lava into the sea developed openings which were caused when the surface of the tunnel collapsed due to pressure build up of the volcanic gases. These openings were discovered in 1968 by Jesus Soto and Luis Morales who christened these open air caves as ‘Jameos’ and proceeded to turn them into an attraction by building a bar, a tropical garden, an azure pool and an six hundred seat auditorium within these openings.

5. Visit The Jardin de Cactus

This unusual attraction represents an amalgamation of art and nature created as it was by Lanzarote’s native son, the celebrated artist Cesar Manrique. This cactus garden which was created in the midst of an old quarry shaped like an amphitheater was the artist’s last work. The garden consists of more than 10,000 different kinds of cacti which were sourced from the Canary Islands, America and Madagascar. It also features sculptures and a restored windmill and is considered to be one of the main attractions of Lanzarote.

Known primarily for the huge populations of Shanghai and Beijing, a lot of first-time visitors don’t realize the beauty and luxury you can experience by visiting some of China’s beach resorts.Though China sees millions of international travelers annually, three areas that deserve some attention based on the waterfront locales are Hainan, Macau, and Shenzhen. The following is a list of those that are the most recommended ones to visit if you plan a vacation to China.

1. Shenzhen

Located in the southern province of Guangdong Province, along the eastern shore of the Pearl River and neighboring the Delta as well as Hong Kong is the city of Shenzhen. Despite not having the historical significance as some of the other Chinese destinations, Shenzhen is a very modern, waterfront city becoming well known for its rapidly growing tourist economy. Because there is such a mix of Chinese cultures that have moved to the Guangdong Province, visitors can sample foods from each the famous eight cuisines of China.

2. Macau

Oftentimes called “The City with Two Faces”, Macau is also the self-proclaimed Las Vegas of the East as the once sleeping little city is now a metropolis of nearly half a million people. Commerce and tourism are the primary reasons that Macau is thriving economically and the casinos have taken gambling to a new extreme. Despite the abundance of “mega-casinos” in the city, Macau’s pleasures are architectural and atmospheric, yet laidback and relaxed.

3. Hainan

Of particular beauty are the tropical beaches located at Dadonghai and Tianya Haijiao. Beautiful sunshine, coconut plantations, and soft sands make these two ocean destinations well worth the trip. The Hairui Tomb where the Ming Dynasty’s compassionate and popular officer Hairui is buried holds historical significance for the locals and is another popular destination in addition to the beach communities above. Another point of interest is the Wugong Temple (Fiver Officials’ Temple) in Haikou.
