Things to Do in Stockholm with Kids

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Stockholm is a family-friendly city to visit, and has several attractions for the kids. Many family attractions in Stockholm are in the centre of the city, and within a walking distance from each other. Many museums offer special tours for kids, and many children’s attractions are free. Prams and trams are easy to take on public transport, and kids go free in buses on the weekend.

Family Attractions in the Djurgården

Stockholm is made up of 14 islands, and the picturesque Kungliga Djurgården is an island in the city centre with several attractions for the whole family.

The youngest kids will love the Lill-Skansen zoo for children. The Aquaria water park has marine life from around the world: there are stingrays and piranhas from the Amazon River and frogs from the Amazonian rainforest, there are corals, sharks and other creatures from tropical waters, and there is an exhibition of Swedish freshwater life.

Also on Djurgården is Junibacken, home to Pippi Longstocking and other familiar characters from the world of Sweden’s famous children’s author Astrid Lingdren. The Story Train takes the kids through Astrid Lindgren’s timeless stories, the characters come to life in the Storybook Square (where the kids can visit the Moominmamma kitchen) and the Villa Villekulla is where Pippi, the strongest girl in the world, lives. There is also a good children’s bookstore in Junibacken.

Nearby, the Gröna Lund amusement park has around 30 attractions and is one of the most popular destinations for families in Stockholm.

The Kolmården Wildlife Park

A 90 minute drive outside Stockholm, Kolmården is Scandinavia’s biggest wildlife park. Animals from the rainforests and savannahs from around the world live here, including gorillas, lions, giraffes, wolves, bears and even the endangered Siberian tiger. You can drive around the wildlife park and get close to the animals, and guided bus tours are offered during the high season in the summer. Kolmården also has a children’s area where the kids can pet farm animals or explore an adventure camp. You can drive to Kolmården from Stockholm on the E4, or take an InterCity train to the Kolmården station.

Hello! In Kolmården Wildlife Park you don’t drive with your own car anymore, there is a world uniqe cablecar that goes closely to the animals. The author can use my pictures (in the link) in this article if she want’s to.
