Hi Agony Aunt/Adile
We travelled to Alghero for our family summer holiday this August and it was absolutely fabulous, as a destination that ticks all the boxes (cultural, restful, beach holiday, great restaurants, nice nightlife). We rented an apartment from a Sardinian family and it was fantastic value and really good quality. I have to say Alghero would suit anyone, a couple looking for a romantic destination, a family looking for a nice beach holiday (which parents can enjoy as well), older people seeking a quiet destination.
Enjoy Sardinia - it's a beautiful place!

Hi Eileen,

Ferry connections from Marseille to Corsica are more frequent than ferries to Sardinia since the SNCM serves 5 different Corsican cities (Bastia, Ajaccio, Ile Rousse, Porto Vecchio and Propriano) and the island is a very popular holiday destination in France. So maybe Corsica is a better choice if you're planning to travel from Marseille.

Just a couple of travel tips: As Travel Agony Aunt mentioned in her comment, book your ferry ticket far in advance. Besides, If you want to travel around Corsica to explore both the fantastic beach side and countryside that the "Island of Beauty" has to offer take your car: Like in Sardinia, many areas are wild and mountainous. They are really worth a visit, but can't all be reached by public transportation.

Dear Eileen,
I've found out that from Marseille there are two crossings every week to Porto Torres, a port in northern Sardinia opposite the Asinara island (a wonderful national park). The sailing time is approximately 18 hours and the tickets are quite cheap if you don't take a private cabin. But be sure to book far in advance! The main ferry lines are SNCM and Corsica Ferries. Hope my information is useful to you!

Hi Agony Aunt,

We are off to Sardinia next month. Finding your article gave me a sudden burst of anticipation and excitement that comes with a first visit. (yes I know I may sound sad to some!)

In fact we are already planning next years trip there! We are driving from Scotland to Eurodisney...that part of the holiday is for our granson's benefit. From Eurodisney it's down to Marseille to catch the ferry. We are not quite sure whether we will head for Corsica or Sardinia, but will know for sure after our visit. The research part is good fun and helps while away the winter months.

Any suggestions you can make regarding the ferries on this route would be very much appreicated. Regards, Eileen.

Regard
