Pubs and Nightlife in San José Costa Rica

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Located on a plateau of 3,700 feet (1,200 meters) in the central valley of Costa Rica is the nation’s capital city of San José.  It is surrounded by lush green mountain ranges and stunning valleys.  San José contains about half the entire population of Costa Rica.  As the city is the hub of the country, there is an abundance of cultural venues, hotels, markets, and museums to visit while you are on vacation here.

However, if you love the party scene, there are a number of pubs and nightlife in San José, Costa Rica that you should be aware of.  The following is a list of the more recommended pubs and nightlife hotspots in the city:

Café Expresivo – although your first impression of this establishment may not be a good one, don’t let that fool you.  This funky and laid-back café, gallery, and restaurant features renowned DJ’s spinning some of the best dance beats you will find anywhere in town.  It’s also a great place to meet new friends and enjoy a relaxing drink or two during an evening out on the town.

Castro’s – the classic example of a Costa Rican nightclub.  A variety of music for dancing is played here including electronic trance, merengue, reggae, and salsa.  You will find that Castro’s has several rooms with different types of environments in each which includes some very quiet and intimate corners.  The club opens at noon and stays open until anywhere from 3:00 to 6:00 am.

El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte – originally developed as a hangout for artists and Bohemians, it has evolved into one of the liveliest and most popular San José nightlife hotspots.  Artists still frequent the establishment but so does a broad cross-section of the local youth, foreign exchange students, and international travelers.  Live music plays on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights so expect it to be very crowded then.

El Tobogán – with a dance floor that is the size of a football field, you would think it is impossible to fill it up.  Don’t be surprised when you walk into this establishment and see that dance floor packed with no room to spare.  El Tobogán is a popular favorite of local dancing partners because of its mixture of Latin music (cumbia, merengue, and salsa) that plays on weekends until 2:00 or 3:00 am.  There are always live bands playing which is the reason the club is so popular.
