Free Things to do in San Francisco

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Oftentimes referred to as the “centerpiece of the Bay Area”, the city of San Francisco, USA, is well known for its great cultural and ethnic diversity as well as its hilly terrain, liberal community, scenic beauty, summer fog, and Victorian architecture.  It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US.  The city is filled with attractions and things to do as well as diversity in international cuisine unlike any other city in the country.  Suffice it to say, it is a city that will never bore the domestic or international traveler.

Believe it or not, if you are vacationing on a budget, there are numerous free things to do in San Francisco.  This is especially important if you are vacationing with your children.  If you’re looking for free things you can do while visiting the city, here are some suggestions:

Explore Crissy Field and the Marina’s Golden Gate Promenade – it’s always delightful strolling down the promenade.  The combination of the bay, beach, boats, clean cool breezes, and Golden Gate views make for an enjoyable experience while being good for the soul.

Wake up and enjoy a cup of North Beach coffee – without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable experiences you can have when you are visiting San Francisco.  The aroma that results from roasting coffee has been referred to as one of the city’s most pleasurable smells.  In the early morning, Columbus Avenue is filled with this aroma.

Explore the Haight – although the “flower power” of the 1960s and early 1970s has long since wilted, the Haight is still sort of a home for certain individuals such as aging hippies, former Deadheads, skate punks, and young panhandlers.  It’s a human zoo of sorts but you are bound to enjoy taking in the hip boutiques, leather shops, and row after row of used-clothing stores.  No trip to San Francisco is complete without wandering through here.

Pretend that you are a guest at the Fairmount or Palace Hotels – despite the fact that you probably won’t be staying at either of these establishments, you can definitely feel like a million dollars just by just by hanging out in all the public spaces of both structures.  Be sure to see the spectacular lobby of the Fairmount on Nob Hill or the Garden Court of the Palace Hotel.

Enjoy a cocktail up in the clouds – viewing the city from any of the top floor cocktail lounges throughout the city will always provide you with spectacular panoramas of the bay and the city.  The drinks aren’t always cheap, but you can always nurse them a little or just order a cup of coffee or tea.
