Don't make them double back along the via dei Fori Imperiali. Take the metro from Termini to the Colosseum - you'll get there in about 2 minutes, and then you can start the walk up to Piazza Venezia in only one direction. Or, to save time, take the 84 bus from Termini straight to Piazza Venezia, then walk up the steps of the Campidoglio around back to see the forum and the Colosseum all at once, in about 30 seconds.

Largo del Torre Argentina is where Caesar was killed, which is a pretty cool factoid.

If they're going to be over by Piazza Navona, at least send them to the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain - they're all practically on top of each other! Then up to the Spanish Steps, finding various treats along the way. Depending on the time, they can hope on the metro to a quick look at St. Peter's, then the metro back to Termini.

Sorry. I get a little obsessive about Rome.
