When in Rome… enjoy Testaccio’s nightlife

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Saturday Night FeverIt’s an understatement to say Rome’s historic center is incredible. But just because you’ve been spending the whole day gazing at the Coliseum, posing in front of Vittorio Emanuele’s statue, throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain and lounging on the Spanish steps does not mean you owe it to the downtown to pass the rest of the evening and late nights there. I promise it won’t miss you for the night.

Instead, why not have a one-night stand with Testaccio?

In the Testaccio district, there’s a bar, club or pub for everyone.

There you will find club after club smashed together in a horse-shoe shape, with young and old swarming the narrow, cobblestone streets. You will find stands of loud-mouthed vendoli (picture baseball games) selling bottles of wine and beer on the street, your fuel for the night. You will find Romans dressed (and barely dressed at all) to impress.

Most clubs have several rooms with different kinds of music so you can room hop and find the jam which makes you get down the most. But don’t even think about driving. Cabs are free and flow like water. You can just catch a cab from Piazza Venezia for around 5 Euro and if you are on a tight budget there are also the night buses n10, and n11 and n9 on via Marmorata.

Does the party ever stop?

No, not really, but the best time to go is Saturday night. It’s also the most expensive night. For about 20 Euro, you get admission and a potent cocktail to start the magic. Make sure your clothes turn heads and you’ll slide right through the crowd.

I Hope I’ve whetted your appetite enough. So go, stop reading and get the hell on a bus or flag a cab and call me in the morning.
