City airports
The city is served by two airports. Fiumicino, later named Leonardo da Vinci airport, is the main international airport and the hub of Italian flag carrier, Alitalia. It is situated some sixteen miles to the southwest of the city center.
Ciampino is the second airport. It is the older and smaller of the two, and lies about eight miles to the southeast of the city center. It was the main airport before the opening of Fiumicino and is now used by mostly charter and low cost airlines. Both airports are reasonably close to the city, but taxis can be expensive. Thankfully there are other options available at both airports.
Getting to the city from Fiumicino
Fiumicino is connected to Rome by rail and has a direct express train, the Leonardo Express, which departs every 30 minutes and has a 30 minute journey time to the main Termini station. Tickets cost EUR11 single. If you’re not in a hurry, the older Metropolitan train stops at Tiburtina and Ostiense stations and connects with the Metro system. A single ticket costs EUR5.50.
Terravision operates a shuttle bus to Termini for EUR4, if you book in advance online, or EUR6 if you pay locally. If you do decide to travel by taxi, a system of fixed fares has been introduced for journeys from the airport to the city center. As of June 2012, the current fare is EUR48. Be careful only to use official taxis, which are white, with a taxi sign on the roof and license information on the door.
Getting to the city from Ciampino airport
Ciampino has no rail link with the city, so you are going to be restricted to bus or taxi. The taxi fare is again a set fare and this time it’s EUR30 to the city center. City center is defined as within the Aurelian Walls. Terravision again operates a shuttle bus to Termini and the fare is again EUR4 if you pre-book online or EUR6 if you pay locally.
