4 Tips for a Romantic Getaway in Venice

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Like a magnificent painting, the silhouette of Venice between the orange skyline and bluish Adriatic Sea at sunset is revered as one of the most romantic views in the world.

This is the perfect place to go for hopeless romantics, couples, and newly-weds who wants to enjoy a truly unique experience. Want to be like Casanova? Then here’s a list of must-see places and things to do to fulfill your romantic getaway fantasies in the world-renowned “City of Love”, Venice!

Everything is Delightfully Romantic

Whether you’re riding the Vaporetto (water buses), feeding the pigeons at Piazza San Marco, searching for cheap bargains at San Polo, or looking for something fresh to cook at the Rialto Market; every view of Venice is just picture-postcard-perfect— as if the place was exclusively made for lovers.

Tip: It’s relatively safe to walk around Venice at anytime of the day. But you will surely enjoy walking more after sun down since the brightly-lit city is like a hazy dreamland, perfect if you’re into romantic walks while chatting the lovely night away.

Get Happily Married in Venice

It’s every girls dream to have a one of a kind and extravagant wedding. What better way to make them happy than get married at one of the most charming cities in the world? Choose to tie the knot and say “I do” in one of the many Palazzos, cathedrals and churches in Venice and you are sure to have the most memorable time of your life!

Tip: There will be lots of paperwork involved before you can get married in Venice so be sure to complete the needed requirements ahead of time. Spontaneity doesn’t happen here (try “The Venetian” in Las Vegas instead), but I assure you, getting married in Venice is really well worth the wait.

Art and Culture with a Touch of Romance

What’s more romantic than watching a play, ballet or musical performance? Choose from Venice’s many cultural destinations including the elegant and historic “La Fenice” (the Phoenix), one of Europe’s famous opera for its exceptional ballet shows and popular plays; and San Vidal Church to satisfy your auditory senses with performance from Venice’s very own musical ensemble, “Interpreti Veneziani.”

Tip: Trying to sweep your partner off their feet? Include a serenaded gondola ride starting from the city center at Piazza San Marco, through the Grand Canal, under the “Bridge of Sighs” (where you can steal a kiss), then end at the church of Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio near the La Fenice Theater. Before watching the play, treat them at the nearby trattorias (casual eateries) in the area which serve traditional Italian cuisine.

Inter-island Escapade

Located 40 minutes away from the main island of Venice is the island of Murano. Couples can watch as modern masterpieces are blown and molded into shape by artisans who have perfected the craft of glassmaking for centuries. Places of interest in the area are several shops, the glass museum, and glass factories. Tip: If Venice is over-flowing with tourists (especially in the month of August), grab your partner and a 24-hour Vaporetto ticket to take the line 41-42 to Murano and have a peaceful and relaxing time exploring the area, away from the noisy crowds.

I agree, Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world. Don’t forget about the Ponte Dei Sospiri….supposedly if you kiss under this bridge, it will bring eternal love.
