Here are our top picks for some of the better nightlife spots in the city and ones that you should definitely include on your vacation itinerary:
Space Dog – this is one of the newer, alternative music venues in Riga and is named after the original heroic space pioneers of the former USSR. Local patrons seem to love this place more so than many others no matter how eclectic the music is. This establishment features one of the best selections of bands, beers, DJs, and food. There’s also a Foosball table to add to the entertainment factor when they hold regular tournaments.
Depo – this establishment is oftentimes referred to as the “dinosaur” of the alternative music scene. Definitely as dirty and grungy as any rock n’ roll bar should be, you’ll quickly discover why this is one of the more popular “watering holes” in the city of Riga. This cavernous concert hall is graced by some of the best bands throughout the Baltic States and other parts of the world.
Pulkvedis – short for Pulkvedim neviens Neraksta (Nobody writes to the Colonel), is one of the better places to drink and people watch. Many tourists enjoy coming to this bar because the atmosphere is considerably more relaxed than others in Riga are. The club is split between two levels with dancing and live bands on the ground floor and a relaxing lounge in the basement.
Dirty Deal Café – if the trendy bar and club scene is not your “thing”, this hidden gem of a bar located off the main drag is sure to please. The building that the Dirty Deal is currently situated in is an old warehouse and is surrounded by the Gallery District. The music menu is comprised of electronic and indie pop music, but don’t overlook the food menu as they serve some of the best dishes in the city.
Boboo – this is one of the newest bars in Riga and is a smaller “hole in the wall” that serves a great cup of coffee during the day and some of the most reasonably priced cocktails in the evening. The beers and drinks are tasty, the seats are comfortable, and the staff is one of the friendliest that you’ll find anywhere in the city.
