Why Visit the 8th Arrondissement of Paris

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

A visit to the 8th arrondissement of Paris will unfold a world of tempting luxury that we dream of. The arrondissement, an administrative unit located on the River Seine’s right bank, comprises seven ward councils: Hoche Friedland, Parc Moceau, Mairie, Europe, Saint-Philippe du Roule, Elysees-Madeleine and Triangle d’or. These councils house an assortment of world-class churches, memorials, museums and other magnificent attractions, and posh hotels, markets, residential structures and restaurants. However, a Paris itinerary will not be complete without the following landmarks:

paris 8th arrondissement

The Monceau, one of the most picturesque parks in Paris, is a treasure trove of beautiful trees, including Corsican pine, honey locust America, maple, Judas, silver lime, sycamore and tulip. High green boughs of the trees draw a diverse range of birds – mallards, jays etc. The huge iron gates of the park are decorated with gold. A colonnade from the Henry II’s unfinished tomb and rotunda complement the garden landscape.

The Champs Elysées, an elite business area with narrow streets, is dotted with touristy bars, boutiques and cafes. The Arc de Triomphe, the triumphal arch located at Place de l’Etoile, lends itself to panoramic views of the city, including the Champs-Elysees and other eleven world-renowned avenues radiating out from it.  The arch, built to commemorate the French Grand Army on the orders of Napoleon, links old and new part of the city. Glass pavings are installed around the lightened fountains at Rond Point des Champs-Elysees; and memorials dedicated to famous Americans are erected in Place des Etats-Unis.

Madeleine, a Graeco-Roman temple style building, is atypical parish known for its aesthetics and religious role. Here, people pray together, celebrate the faith and do charity work. The memorial church with broad staircase houses relics of St. Mary Magdalene.

Petit Palais, City of Paris Fine Arts Museum, located on Avenue Winston Churchill, exhibits an array of artifacts: sculptures, paintings and other work of art. The collection includes masterpieces from the 18th and 17th centuries, the Renaissance period and the eastern and western Christian world.

Triangle d’or (the golden triangle) boasts grandiose apartments, high concentration of up-scale fashion boutiques including head quarters of Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton, and famous upscale hotel, George V hotel. The triangle is bordered with Avenue des Champs Elysees in north, Avenue Montaigne in east and Avenue Geogres V. in west. The area where glitterati live epitomizes elegance and luxury for which Paris has a worldwide reputation.
