The city of Luxor is considered the premier tourist destination of upper Egypt and the Nile River Valley. If you are planning on vacationing in Luxor and you are looking for some enjoyable nightlife and pubs to relax in, you need to be aware of the fact that the city like the entire country is Islamic. This means that Muslims are forbidden from buying, consuming, or selling any alcoholic beverages. However, it’s not the end of the world and we do have a few suggestions for you.

First and foremost, despite the religious implications, Egyptians are extremely tolerant of international travelers with money and they are also a very pragmatic people as well. Any of the hotels and restaurants that are not Muslim owned sells alcoholic beverages, you just have to find which ones do. Additionally, at the northern end of the Luxor Temple, there is a duty-free store that sells beer and brand name spirits but you will have to show them your passport and make your purchase within two days of arriving in Luxor. When you leave the shop, keep your purchase out of sight.
Here are a few recommendations for nightlife spots and pubs whenever you spend time in the city:
King’s Head Pub – this English style pub offers several tasty beers and about two dozen cocktails as well as billiards and darts.
Murphy’s Irish Bar – a huge two-story pub that offers football matches on the big screen TV situated upstairs and a pool table downstairs. The music of the 1980’s fills the air, but it is played quietly enough so that people can still hear themselves talk. The bar offers a relaxing atmosphere and despite the size of this establishment, it is not too pricey.
Saint Mina Hotel Bar – the bar of this Christian owned and operated bar is located in the cellar. It features a local vibe and the cheapest beers in town.
Sinbad – if you want to enjoy a drink outdoors underneath the trees, this is the place to visit. The owner keeps the patio atmosphere well decorated with fairy lights in the trees and the place is oftentimes frequented by friendly locals. The beer is priced affordably and though the food is only average, it is not too pricey.
Sinouhe/Red Lion Pub – the pub is located on the second floor of the building and is a disco/pub combination establishment. Black lights, a disco ball, red walls, and rocking music of the 1990’s create the necessary atmosphere for this livelier nightlife establishment. For those of you who want to relax in a quieter atmosphere, you’ll be happy to know that the action and the crowds don’t start showing up until midnight.
