London is home to some of the greatest theatre productions in the world, and you absolutely must see at least one of these London West End shows when visiting this fantastic city. If you are lucky enough to have the time and the cash to spare, try to seeing all five!
The Lion King – based on the Disney film of the same name, the musical is one that the whole family can enjoy. Based loosely on Hamlet, the birth of young prince Simba prompts his evil uncle to murder Simba’s father to gain control of the kingdom.
Singing In the Rain – for lovers of the old classic musicals, it is the perfect choice. The story of a silent film actress struggling to fit into the new world of “talkie” films is a witty and catchy musical that has been considered a classic for good reason. It is a musical thats all about song and dance, and won’t fail to entertain.
Les Miserables – a more serious West End classic this is the story of Jean Valjean’s struggle to escape his criminal past against the backdrop of the French Revolution. This story of love and redemption is one of the most beloved musicals of all time, moving London audiences to tears since the 1980s.
War Horse – For those who are less interested in the music and more in the story, this is the play that has the critics and theatre-goers talking this year. Based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo, its the moving story of a young man whose prized horse is sold for use on the front in World War I, and how his horse navigated the war and found its way home.
Matilda The Musical - For a taste of truly British theatre, see this recent addition to the West End. Based on Roald Dahl’s novel, Matilda, this story of a clever child who is misunderstood and hated by her parents and her peers, and tormented by her schoolmistress Miss Trunchbull is told in a brand new way with the addition of the music of Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly.
