Free Events to Watch at London Olympics 2012

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Many individuals are wondering about how much their budgets will tolerate when traveling to London for the Summer Olympic Games.  One of the best ways that you can make the trip more affordable is with your airfare and lodging. Another suggestion is to check out certain FREE Olympic and Paralympic events taking place at the 2012 London Summer Games.  Here are a few to consider:

Marathon – the 5th and 12th of August is when the Olympic Marathon takes place and passes some very famous and historical London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, and Trafalgar Square.  This competition only has 80 individuals competing unlike the London Marathon.

Race Walk – taking place on the 4th and 11th of August, the Race Walk is part of London’s 2012 Athletics program.  Central London is the location of the race with the Mall being the finishing point as the competition includes a 50k race for men and a 20k race for both men and women.  According to the rules, one foot must always be touching the ground.

Road Cycling – events take place from the 28th of July through the 1st of August.  You will see some of the world’s best two-wheelers in this competition from the Mall where the race begins and then heading south and west through London.  Hampton Court Palace is the start and finish point of the time trials.

Swimming Marathon – taking place the 9th and 10th of August, the Swimming Marathon is held in Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake where individuals compete in a 10k marathon in the water.  You’ll have a chance to watch two hours worth of competing as the swimmers must make 6 laps of the lake.  The race typically ends in dramatic fashion with a sprint finish.

Triathlon – held on the 4th and 7th of August, this is one of the most grueling competitions of the Olympic Games and includes cycling, running, and swimming all of which takes place in Hyde Park.  The competition includes a 40k cycle race, a 10k run, and a 1,500 meter swim.  Every second is critical to winning the gold medal.

As you can see from the above, even if you aren’t able to get tickets to some of the Olympic competitions, you will still have a wide range of event options to take in when visiting London for the Summer Olympic Games.
