London Camden Crawl

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

The London Borough of Camden is one of several that comprise the central part of the city.  In addition to the borough, there is also Camden Town which is an inner city district of it and the central neighborhood as well.  Always a popular destination for both locals and vacationers, the borough and Camden Town are rich in history as well as entertainment venues worth attending.  This is especially the case if you’re a fan of music as it is the site of London’s Camden Crawl.

The Camden Crawl takes place the first weekend in May every year and began in 1997, taking place across the majority of Camden’s live venues.  It is one of the most popular music festivals in the UK and brings you the best there is in new music.  Some of the greatest London night clubs support the Camden Crawl and it is not unusual for up to 150 bands to perform over the weekend in the different live venues of the area.

It is renowned for introducing the newest in musical talent every year as well as featuring some of the top name bands of the day.  Additionally,  the festival provides attendees the chance to participate in other entertaining activities such as:

  • bingo games
  • comedy
  • karaoke
  • poetry
  • theater
  • visual art

It’s one of the most festive and liveliest events of the year in the London area.  Just be aware that you need to save some energy for the parties that occur after the shows are over as these can continue into the wee hours of the morning.

Some of the featured highlights of this year’s Camden Crawl included:

  • Bookslam – storytellers of all disciplines gather together
  • Camden Fringe – a comedy festival that is exclusively Camden’s
  • Poster Roast – a phenomenal collection of some great rock posters
  • Rough Trade Pub Quiz – this is a true test of catch phrases, introductions to songs, and anything musically oriented
  • Skiptheater – a musical and theatrical extravaganza
  • Stitch London – the highlight of the “Submit to the Knit” campaign featuring knitted graffiti

If you visit the city of London and love all types of music venues, this is a must-see event.  What can you expect to see? Anything from Travis to Amy Winehouse, not to mention a huge array of today’s best Indie artists!  And of course, during those musical downtimes in between performances you can check out any of the events mentioned above.

You don’t need to worry about a place to stay for the weekend as there are a number of affordable lodging venues in the immediate vicinity.  If you are looking for more information on the event, there are numerous London tourism websites which provide that.
