Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Olympic Arts Festival Director Ruth Mackenzie has already stated that she felt this years festival will most likely be the largest single cultural event and performance of many people’s lifetimes. The line-up of the festival was recently announced for the event which coincides with the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. From what Mackenzie told the press in a recent interview regarding the Olympic Arts Festival, the event will highlight the newest works of artists, comics, filmmakers, musicians, and much more. Many of the arts events that are held will take place in unusual locations throughout the UK. They will be showcasing the finest in domestic and international culture so it’s obvious that the world’s eyes will be upon these events.
The hugely ambitious yet culturally-based celebration will feature celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and the musical talents of Jay-Z and Rihanna who will be the headline acts at the Hackney Weekend Music Festival sponsored by BBC Radio 1. This festival is expected to draw 100,000 spectators, possibly more. The festival will also feature performances by a number of other top-of-the-charts groups and individuals which will include Florence + the Machine and Jack White.
For the classical music aficionados, Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and its 200 members will be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The concert will be held in Scotland outside the Sterling Castle. Additionally, where the visual arts are concerned, a life-sized “bouncy castle” that imitates Stonehenge will be appearing throughout the UK as well during the Cultural Olympiad.
As was mentioned above, the Cultural Olympiad is comprised of 12,000 different events and will feature around 25,000 artists all making contributions from the different countries of the world that are competing in the Olympic Games. The visual arts presentations will include contemporary artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Rachel Whiteread. There will also be a series of short films including one of Mike Leigh’s award winners.
As a part of the theatrical program, Actress Cate Blanchett will be starring in the newest adaptation of “Gross und Klein” and will be joined by the Sydney Theater Company. There will also be a series of dance and poetry performances that coincide with the theatrical program. All in all, it is estimated that the thousands of events will draw well over 3 million people.
