Located in Scandinavia and Northern Europe is the country of Denmark, a beautiful nation to behold and an excellent tourist destination as well. Long-ago home of the Vikings, much of the culture is still intact from that era. However, it has become very modernized and prosperous at the same time while still maintaining all of its historical charm. If your children are part of the holiday equation, then you should definitely read on, as there are many family attractions that are sure to delight you at every turn.
The Danes have always felt that their country is worth the visit, and whatever your fancy is while visiting there, you’ll quickly discover that there is a multitude of entertaining choices to engage in. Despite being to the north, the climate here is a pleasant, if not refreshing, surprise. The summers are never too hot and the winters are (surprisingly) not that cold. And this is probably the main reason why the Danes tend to vacation within their country’s boundaries.
Danes tend to gravitate towards the beaches and the sea during the warmer months, and you will soon discover why when you visit there and if there are children on the vacation, they will definitely love this. It’s almost a law that is required by Mother Nature in Denmark. The nation’s coastline is 73 km (over 45 mi.) long, and the beaches are nothing short of pristine. Sailing is one of the preferred family activities in Denmark as thousands engage in the sport, and during the summer, it is not uncommon to see visitors and their children from neighboring countries arrive in their sailboats.
Among the many attractions in Denmark, the most targeted destinations among family tourists are the following:
- Copenhagen – Amalienborg Palace, Tivoli Gardens, and the Copenhagen Zoo are 3 must-see attractions if children are along
- Helsingør – make sure you tour the Kronborg Castle, the legendary home of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” which looks like it was designed by Disney
- The Island of Ærø – the Ærø Museum is a sight to behold, but the dining that awaits you in the old “kro” (inn) affords you a true taste of Danish cuisine
- Odense – the childhood home of Hans Christian Andersen, decorated and geared to the many aspects of the man’s life
- Roskilde – the “cathedral city” and a good adventure base for taking in such sights as the Viking Museum 12 miles to the north of town
Overall, traveling around the Danish countryside is easy to do as most targeted areas are readily accessible by bus, car, or train. Just remember, the true style of touring Denmark is by bicycle and you will see literally thousands when you visit the country.
