Hen Nights Abroad – The Top 5 European Locations

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

The hen night is often a big night out for the bride and her friends. Partying in your local town or city has long been the most popular way to celebrate, but in recent years the “drinking/stripper/fancy dress” combination has given way to something a little more elaborate. Now, lots of future brides choose a ‘hen weekend’ rather than a ‘hen night’, spending some time away with their closest friends, visiting a new city or country and having plenty of fun on the way.

So if you’re planning a hen night abroad, which are the top European locations for celebrating?

We asked the team of international writers at Zankyou, one of the top wedding sites present in more than 17 countries, to pick the most popular hen night location for brides from their countries and here’s what we found…

Barcelona welcomes plenty of low cost flights from all over Europe and this, combined with good food, great weather, affordable prices and excellent nightlife make the city an automatic choice for lots of Italian brides. You can also get the perfect dose of culture in the Catalan capital, with great museums and architecture, as well as an opportunity to relax on the city’s Barceloneta beach. So whether you decide to party, hang out with Picasso and Gaudi or watch the waves while you’re in Barcelona, you’ll be in the perfect destination for saying goodbye to single life with your friends.

The hen night is a major part of British brides’ wedding planning. Now, it’s quite normal to have two get togethers – one in your home town with a big party, often including family members, and a second, smaller trip with your closest friends to a European destination. One of our favourite hen night destinations in the UK is the Spanish island of Ibiza. Partying, good weather and some exclusive nightclubs are pretty much guaranteed if you visit this lively destination. And, you might even partake in some star spotting while you’re having fun with your friends! There are plenty of cheap flights to the island in the spring and summer months. So if you’re looking to combine lively nightlife with some sun on the beach, it’s the perfect place for a last-chance single holiday with your closest friends!

Lots of Spanish brides organise a few days away with their friends in the neighbouring city of Lisbon. The Portuguese capital offers plenty of entertainment, both day and night. Museums and theatres are home to some amazing cultural events, while the ocean breeze and the nightlife in the Bairro Alto are just some of the things for which the European city really stands out. Ideally, hen parties should spend at least 4 nights in the city, adding a day trip to nearby Cascais to the agenda – not to be missed!

One of the favourite destinations for French brides is London, the true metropolis of Europe. There’s so much to do there, from visiting the typical sights at Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and Saint Paul’s Cathedral, to an art weekend with visits to the Tate, the British Museum and the National Gallery. And don’t forget the shopping! Whether you’re a fan of vintage and plan on heading to Carnaby Street or would rather a bit of luxury at Harrods, there are plenty of shops for everyone. And what better after a hard day’s tourism, than the typically British afternoon tea in one of the city’s famous hotels? Perfect!

Unlike in other countries, German brides and their friends tend to stay at home for their hen nights. One of the favourite cities for hen nights in Germany is Munich, home of the world famous Oktoberfest beer festival, which welcomes 6 million people every year. Known as the ‘city with a heart’, Munich has an amazing historic town centre, which includes palaces, the Frauenkirche church and several museums. And of course, for a city known for its beer, the nightlife is guaranteed not to disappoint!
