Founded in the mid 1500’s, Helsinki has been appropriately nicknamed the “Daughter of the Baltic” and was named the capital city in 1812. The Russian czar again built the city to resemble St. Petersburg. A cosmopolitan city that still retains the old-world charm, it is a tourist destination. Aside from the architecture, culture, dining venues, and shopping venues, one of the main tourist attractions are Helsinki’s most visited museums. The following will give you an idea of the better ones to visit while vacationing in the city.

Ateneum Art Museum – long recognized as the most significant national museum of art in Finland. It contains the largest collection of Finnish art, paintings, and sculptures. There are numerous pieces of artwork produced by many of Finland’s most notable artists. Special admission fees apply during when major exhibitions are scheduled but individuals under the age of 18 are normally admitted FREE of charge. FREE admission is also the norm from 5 until 8 pm on the first Wednesday each month.
Design Museum – the structure is filled with modern commercial art as well as industrial design exhibits which is only closed on Mondays. The “History of 20th Century Consumer Goods” exhibit is permanently showcased in the museum’s basement which is the primary reason that this is such a popular venue to visit. The contributions of Finland’s most well known designers are the primary focus of the museum.
Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art – features some of the most unusual collections of contemporary Finnish art as well as artworks from neighboring countries as well as an array of periodic exhibitions. Even the structure is a work of architectural art. Every first Wednesday of the month offers FREE admission between 5 and 8 pm.
National Museum of Finland (Kansallismuseo) – a beautifully designed classic piece of Finnish architecture is the best way to described this structure that houses this older museum which has been recently remodeled. Displays of historical Finnish artifacts and other items are on display here. Admission is FREE for individuals younger than 18 and every Tuesday the admission is FREE from 5:30 to 8 pm.
Heureka Science Center – this is the perfect museum for a day trip and to visit if your children are vacationing with you. Hands-on exhibits and science tests hold the interest of literally every child that tours the museum. There is also a store where you can purchase interesting memorabilia that is associated with science and related fields.
Apart from the museums, there are a host of other sightseeing destinations such as Temppeliaukio Church, Helsinki Design District, Sea Fortress, Presidential Palace, Sibelius Monument, Ateneum and Suomenlinna Island. You can take a customized tour or just join one of the day tours organized by a travel company.
