Gay Spots in Stockholm, Sweden

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

The city of Stockholm is one of the most popular holiday and vacation destinations in Sweden and the whole Scandinavia.  What most individuals haven’t realized yet is the fact that it supports a huge gay and lesbian community and is a very popular destination for those international travelers.  It is not uncommon to see rainbow flags in every one of the cities numerous districts.  Stockholm’s popularity with the gay and lesbian community stems from the fact that the city and its citizens are more tolerant than many other cities and countries.

Stockholm's Torget

Despite the fact that there are no districts in Stockholm that are labeled as gay and lesbian, the more popular districts where that is concerned are Gamla Stan (or Old Town), Kungsholmen, and Södermalm.  These districts are where you will find cafes, clubs, pubs, and restaurants that cater to the gay and lesbian community more than others.  This is also true where hotels and lodging is concerned.  For all practical purposes, Stockholm is viewed as the gay capital of Sweden and quite possibly all of Scandinavia.

The following is a list of the top recommended locations in the bar and nightclub, cafe, event, and restaurant sector:

Ambassadeur

A modern bar and nightclub in Stockholm that features several different club venues under one roof.  Ambassadeur White is the largest of the bunch and focuses primarily on R&B and Soul music venues.  The theme is described as a feel-good type of retro featuring music hits from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.

Chokladkoppen

Situated in Stockholm’s Stortorget Square near the Royal Palace in historic Old Town, this cozy café serves up some of the tastiest pastries and sandwiches that you will find anywhere in Old Town as well as the entire city.  Outdoor seating is available and the café is always busy during hours of operation.

Patricia

There are different seven bars (pubs) located within the old ship harbored at Stadsgårdskajen Quay.  Five of them are indoor venues and two feature outdoor facilities during the warmer months of the year.  Although, there are no recognized exclusively bar or pub facilities in the city of Stockholm, these are a combination bar/nightclub/restaurant venues and the music varies from one to the next.  For 16 years now, the Sunday Club has remained the most popular location of the 7 with the gay and lesbian community.

Torget

Considered the most popular meeting place and restaurant for gays and lesbians due its central location in Old Town Stockholm.  It is extremely active and busy at nights because of how centrally located it is, no matter what night of the week you visit it.  Additionally, many newcomers and travelers prefer Torget because they inform you of updates and tips for things to see and do in Stockholm.
