Gay Pride 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

2012 sees Rio de Janeiro host its 17th annual Gay Pride event, and this year is sure to be a scorcher! Falling in mid-November, the long weekend of partying will help to ring in the Brazilian Spring, which should bring dry weather and average temperatures of 30 degrees celsius (86 degrees farenheit). So pack your swimming costume and your sunblock, and get ready to make the most of one of the most vibrant and exciting celebrations of diversity to be found in the world today.

The most important event of Gay Pride in Brazil’s former capital city is of course the march itself, which normally reaches up to a mile and a half in length, and will span the Copacabana Beach with music, dancing and all the colours of the rainbow. It falls on the Sunday this year and if you get to the beach in the early afternoon you’ll be able to take part in the warm-up event, which normally features DJs, music and the chance to get a good look at some of the fabulous costumes and drag acts that imbue the whole event with such vibrancy. As well as the parade and Sunday’s festivities, Gay Pride in Rio encompasses a whole week events and festivities. Last year’s celebrations included dance and arts performances, exhibitions, all-you-can-eat buffets and more, so prepare yourself for an extravanganza of cultural activities.

Of course, there is a serious side to the vibrant celebrations of Rio’s Gay Pride, but it is seriousness tempered with triumphant jubilation. The founders of the event are a non-profit organisation based in Rio de Janeiro and have worked for the last nineteen years to make their native society more tolerant, inclusive and diverse. Much has been achieved in this time, and the different themes of each year’s Gay Pride reflect their commitment to their cause. This year’s slogan expounds equality and ends ‘all violence should be a crime’. Its powerful but exultant message adds the pleasant knowledge of supporting an important social movement to all the joyous revelry that this unique event has to offer.
