Located on Sicily’s eastern coast is the town of Taormina, a hillside location that is one of the most popular destinations on the island. During the hottest months of July and August, the beach is crowded with locals and tourists alike. However, Taormina is also a popular favorite of the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender) community and has been rated as a gay-friendly town.

The city’s claim to fame and the allure for the GLBT community stems from the famous German photographer of the early 1900’s, Wilhelm von Gloeden. The man was known for his pastoral nude studies that focused on the young men of Sicily and many postcards depicting his photographic work can still be found on racks in stores. Up until von Gloeden began his works on the island, photos of nude men had only been taken for scientific studies of the anatomy.
Isoco Guest House – one of the more popular gay-friendly lodging facilities in Taormina, this smaller guest house is a favorite of GLBT travelers. Its garden with hot tub, great sea views, internet access, and kitchenettes makes for a relaxing place to stay when visiting this area of Sicily.
Mendolia Beach Hotel – located on Taormina’s shoreline and close to the historic center of town. All guestrooms are equipped with a mini-bar, private bathroom with shower, satellite TV feed and FREE wireless internet access. Additionally, every room has a balcony for taking in the spectacular vistas of Isola Bella Bay. A buffet style breakfast is served every morning of the week.
Villa Romeo Hotel – another popular gay-friendly lodging facility, the Villa Romeo Hotel is a converted 19th century palace that provides visitors with all the elegance they can stand at a very affordable price. It features a beautifully landscaped courtyard and wide open areas filled with green spaces. Rooms are equipped with numerous amenities and are all sound-proofed for added comfort and quiet.
Shatulle – although most of the other bars, cafés, and clubs in Taormina are gay-friendly, this is the only bar that caters strictly to the GLBT community. It is also rated as one of the best terrace bars on the island with a great atmosphere to match. The bar is open every day of the year.
Additionally, there are two other gay-friendly nightlife destinations that are worth checking out when visiting Taormina including the Casanova Pub located on Via Ignazio Danti and the Perroquet located on Piazza S. Domenico.
