Gay Bars and Clubs of Seminyak, Bali

Friday, January 27th, 2012

One of the more popularly visited beach towns of Bali is the city of Seminyak and one of the more upscale destinations in the region with numerous high-end bars and restaurants as well as mostly luxury accommodations.  It is hard to realize when you first view the city that only 10 years ago it was somewhat of a backwater, undeveloped community that didn’t entice many international travelers and tourists.  Although it is a targeted destination of romantic heterosexual couples, Bali has a very lively yet smaller gay and lesbian scene. For those looking for a fun, gay vacation, with a host of visits to the bars and clubs in Bali, Seminyak is the perfect vacation spot.

The following is a listing of the some of the most popular and recommended gay bars and clubs of Seminyak, Bali:

Mixwell – Dyana Pura Street is the location of this bar and one of the more popular bar stops in the city when heading out to the club scene.  It is the home to drag shows that are conducted every night of the week and is a favorite spot of both locals and tourists.  The bar sees its busiest time between the hours of 11 pm and 2 am.

Bali Joe – located right next door to Mixwell, many locals say that barhopping is at its best by jumping back and forth between the two bars.  Bali Joe features its own go-go dancers and some extremely popular drag shows.  The atmosphere oftentimes rings loudly with bar patrons singing some well known gay anthems.

Club Cosmo – named after a very popular cosmopolitan cocktail, Club Cosmo is one of the newer gay bars in Seminyak which features a late night dance club as well as a newly installed terrace bar.  Nightly shows begin promptly at 10:00 and are followed up by the “Midnight Extravaganza” which features some of the finest female impersonators in Bali as well as an abundance of talented male dancers.

Bottoms-Up Bar – one of the most popular gay bars in Seminyak, the Bottoms-Up is well known for its nightly diva drag queen performances with go-go dancers accompanying them.  The Bottoms-Up Bar is situated adjacent to the Bali Joe and our next choice for recommended gay bars, the Facebar Bali.

Facebar Bali – one of the relatively newer bars of the Dhyanapura gay area of the city, the Facebar Bali is situated in between the Bottoms Up and Bali Joe Bars.  Just like the other gay bars located on this street in Seminyak, this bar features female impersonators as well as go-go dancers.  However, the primary focus is still the go-go performers along with pole dancing and a “shower show.”

What about lesbian specific bars? Which is the best for a mixed crowd (not only male).
    Thanks

When we booked our holiday to Bali, the gay scene was not even on our radar. Our main focus was scuba diving, surfing and site seeing. However we came across “gay Seminyak” and decided to explore a bit more when we had an evening free- and man it was fabulous! We have never had so much fun even in ‘Heaven’ in London! There are 3-4 gay bars next to each other. We went in Mixwell because it was the first one. The waiters are super friendly and it was very interesting to listen to their stories of coming out. It seemed that all gay people in Indonesia have one last refuge of Bali due to it’s tolerant culture. And they have given it back to Bali BIG TIME! The go go dancers (6packs and all); the lip-synching divas (Rhianna, Britney and Christina!) were high class acts. We were so so impressed! The drag shows have a kind of ‘old bored man’ connotation in the western world, but here they were camp as tits and full of young crowd.Drinks are not cheap but 2-3 will get you on the dance floor very soon! And the best part was the music!!!!!! It never strayed away from the anthems and it just got merrier and merrier! We are going back again tonight!

We gay people are accustomed to being made to feel uncomfortable in certain establishments. But that doesn’t make it right. Which is the critical point that you have overlooked. People were turned away solely because they are gay. That is unacceptable and, if there is a nondiscrimination ordinance that includes sexual orientation, it is against the law.
