We asked the staff of Axel Hotels, a Spanish gay friendly hotel chain that owns Hotel Axel Barcelona, Spain, Axel Hotel Berlin, Germany, and Axel Hotel Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their “Top 5″ list of gay friendly restaurants in Barcelona includes Kitchen by Axel, Suculus, Tafino, Sazzerak and Iurantia.  All located in the trendy area of Eixample -  also known as Gayxample for being the heart of the city’s gay scene, these  Barcelona restaurants offer great food in a modern atmosphere. 1. Kitchen by Axel

The Axel Barcelona’s restaurant is not a gay-only restaurant, but an hetero friendly place where guests can meet beautiful people in a urban, cosmopolitan atmosphere.  Kitchen by Axel has imported in Barcelona a culinary tradition from Buenos Aires called ‘pasos‘. The ‘pasos‘ is a step-based menu that allows guests to choose three yummy steps (or courses) and adapt dishes to their own personal tastes. The Axel Hotel Barcelona also features the Sky Bar: Included in the “10 World’s Hottest Places to Be” list, this lounge bar offers great cocktails and features swimming pool and Jacuzzi.

2. Suculus

Located in Barcelona gay district, just a few minute walk from Joan Miro’ Park, Suculus is an excellent international restaurant that offers some great food in a chilled-out atmosphere.  Chef Alex Castillo has  concocted a fresh, creative menu  inspired from different world cuisines. Cod brandade-filled ravioli with Roquefort sauce and artichokes crisps,  pork filet with cinnamon and orange peel and pears in wine, Japanese steak Tartar, peppered chocolate sablé and pistachio cake withe Greek yogurt are some of the delicious specialties that guests can sample  in the trendy, relaxing décor of Suculus. Created by Barcelona young designers,  this Manhattan-style restaurant pays special attention to light and sound.

3. Tafino

Located in the heart of Gayxample,  Tafino is the perfect place to enjoy an intimate dinner and start a night out in Barcelona.  This Barcelona restaurant boasts elegant decors with white walls, candles, chandeliers,  old lamps and black mirrors.  In this gay friendly restaurant,  you can sample delicious, creative cuisine by young chef Armando Tovar while listening to acid jazz,  Bossa Nova and world music.  Tafino’s menu includes English bread toast with goat cheese and apple sauté,  Venezuelan  Pabellón Criollo, the Leche por todos lados (a special dessert made of evaporated, condensed and cream milk), and more succulent, innovative dishes.

4. Sazzerak

This Gayxample restaurant boasts a modern, laid-back ambience that will make you feel at home during your stay in Barcelona. Sazzerak Barcelona is also a bar and features a sunny terrace: the perfect spot to start the day having coffee and croissants.  You can sample a large variety of Mediterranean tapas or have an early dinner and take the international menu that includes bruschetta, pasta, tartar of smoked salmon  pan-fried camembert cheese with a mango-dip, grilled meat, fajitas, fish specialties, mild thai curry and vegetarian dishes.     Just looking for a non gay place to stay, have 3 kids, but everything in Barcelona seems to be “gay friendly”
    What does this actually mean, I have nothing against gays , but heavens, someone please tell me what it means.

    Hi there,

    Barcelona is not only a gay friendly travel destination, it’s also a family-friendly city. It’s difficult to recommend you a kid-friendly hotel in Barcelona since I don’t know your holiday budget nor your interests, but here are a few suggestions : Mariano Cubi (near Avenida Diagonal) Hotel Medium Abalon (near the Sagrada Familia), Hotel acta 40 (Gothic Quarter).
