5 fun facts about the French Riviera

Come and rub shoulders with the rich and famous this summer in the pristine French Riviera! Warm sunny days, elegant resorts and gambling through the night, this long stretch is found along the beautiful Mediterranean Sea from the town of Cassis in France till the border between France and Italy and  includes many well-known cities in France like Nice, Cannes, Monaco, and Saint Tropez.

1. What’s in a name?

The seaside coasts in France are named after precious stones. If you were to traverse through, you’ll find names such as mother of pearl coast, alabaster coast and the jade coast and if you are looking for more colorful ones you can find the amethyst coast or the ruby coast!

FUN FACT: In 1887, The French Riviera was the first to acquire such a nickname as Cote d’Azur or Azure coast.

2. Lights! Camera! Action!

Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious and oldest film festivals in the world! This glamorous event is usually held every year in the month of May and is attended by everybody who is anybody in the movie industry and showcases many international films and screenplays.

FUN FACT: This film festival was conceived in the 1930’s by Jean Jay, the then French education Minister in outrage over the interference of the fascist Italian and German Governments in the selection of movies for the Venice film festival.

3. MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!

Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, and is home to the Monte-Carlo casino complex which comprises of the Grand theatre de Monte Carlo, an opera and a ballet house. The route of the Monaco Grand prix runs past it. Three James Bond movies have been filmed in the ritzy interiors of the Belle Epoque casino.

FUN FACT: For all the gambling the tourists get to do, the citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble let alone step inside one. When it was first constructed.it was called a health spa to avoid criticism from the church!

4. Mystery Man

Ile Saint-Margerite (St-Marguerite Island) is a significant historical site within the city of Cannes. This island fortress is just a 15 minute ferry ride from the main city. There is also the Musee de la Mer or Museum of the Sea which showcases many shipwrecks off the island and Roman artifacts.

FUN FACT: The mysterious Man in the Iron Mask spent 11 years of his life within this prison. You can visit the cell he resided in the Musee de la Mer.

5. Be a ‘Nose!’(Perfumer)

Nature lovers, this one is for you! Grasse , a 20 minute drive from Cannes , has been the capital of the perfume industry since the Renaissance period. You can even create your own perfume at the “studio des fragrances” with the help of some talented technicians!

FUN FACT: About three quarters of the worlds essences are produced from these gardens comprising of daffodils, lavender, jasmine and much more!

Everything in the French Riviera will prove to be something a little over the top-whether expense wise or experience wise!

    Hey that is so cool as I thing you should know I have been to see that and I think it is wonderful. :D
    Hey did you get that that was a smiley face because I love this place? Anyway did you know that you should be a tourist because it is very fun I am one. Can you do the sun 6+1 I can weird huh? I love this country so much I have been 11 times and to lots of other places, I love travelling as I think you can tell. : D
