London, UK is one of the most expensive cities in the world. But if you know where to look, it is also filled with things that don’t cost a penny. Here are five things to do in London for free:

1. Go to a museum
Most big museums, including the British Museum, don’t charge for entry, and some art galleries, such as the National Gallery and Tate Modern, are free.
2. Walk!
Many sights are within walking distance from each other. The Tube, as Londoners call their underground system, is expensive and often overcrowded, and walking might even be faster than taking the bus. Walk around Westminster and take a look at Big Ben, Parliament Square and Westminster Abbey. Stroll around Soho, or go for a walk along the river Thames to see the London Eye, the South Bank Centre and Tate Modern. Walk around East London’s street markets from Brick Lane to Spitalfields. So buy a decent map (such as the A-Z, a book no Londoner goes without) and put on your trainers!
3. Spend the afternoon in one of London’s parks
Sunbathe, fly a kite, try roller blading, play football or cricket or throw your Frisbee. Or have a picnic - this is what most locals do as soon as the sun comes out in the spring. From the very first sunny day in March, the city’s parks are full of Londoners enjoying their sandwiches and their Sunday newspapers. Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are both great picnic spots.
4. Go to a free concert
There are free concerts in the South Bank, in the Barbican, in some of London’s parks (obviously in the summertime) and even in Trafalgar Square. Pick up a copy of the Time Out magazine, or for free events organized by the Major of London, see London’s official website.
5. Enjoy a view over London from Hampstead Heath
The highest open-air public space in London. And while you’re there, jump into one of the Heath’s swimming ponds. The famous ponds (there is even a separate pond for women only) keep you cool in the heat of the summer, but the hardiest of Londoners swim in them throughout the year.
