If you didn’t know, one of the most popular holidays in Italy is surely the “Ferragosto” on the 15th of August. Originally, in Roman times, it was related to a celebration of the middle of the summer and the end of the hard labour in the fields. Before the Roman Catholic Church came into existence, however, this holiday was celebrated in the Roman Empire to honor the gods and the cycle of fertility and ripening. The original Latin name, Feriae Augusti (“Festivals Holidays of the Emperor Augustus”)
Nowadays, this day is mainly used by italians to go to their beach houses and celebrate. For this year we wanted to focus on those that unfortunately are not able to leave and are going to spend this weekend in the city. First of all we thought to recommend some of the best resources on the eternal city, to best plan holidays in Rome and choose carefully the most interesting activities for the Ferragosto. To catch some of the best pictures for Rome, Italy head over to Secret Rome.com, whereyou’ll find some fantastic shots from Caimin Jones.
