Darling Harbour – situated just a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Sydney City Centre is Darling Harbour, home to numerous activities for families with children of all age groups. These include the Australian National Maritime Museum, the IMAX Theatre Sydney, the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Aquarium (the #1 attraction in Australia), Sydney Wildlife World, and The Nine Holer (mini-golf).
During the Christmas holiday season, Darling Harbour features a lot of free entertainment geared to families as well as numerous festivals and street theater performances. It’s a great place for New Year’s celebrations as well with entertainment available for people of all age groups. Australia Day celebrations (January 26th) is one of the main festivals that are held here in Darling Harbour.
Luna Park – modeled after New York’s famed Coney Island, Luna Park began operations in 1935 with a variety of classic rides, many of which are still in operation today. Sydney Harbour provides the backdrop for this classic amusement park and entertainment center. You will quickly discover what lies in store for you when you pass beneath the giant grinning, painted clown face.
Taronga Park Zoo – here your kids will be able to visit up close with some of Australia’s most exotic and spectacular creatures. Take your time wandering through the zoo and seeing the exhibits of dingoes, kangaroos, native koalas, Tasmanian devils, and wombats.
Sydney’s beaches – the two most popular beaches in the area are Bondi and Manly. Bondi Beach features a one kilometer stretch of golden sand and some of the finest surfing in Sydney and if the waves are up, you and your children will enjoy the rock pool there. Manly Beach is great for a day out with the entire family. You reach Manly Beach by taking a ferry across Sydney Harbour which the kids always enjoy.
Centennial Park – if you want to take the kids to a place where they can burn off excess energy, you can rent bicycles here or rollerblades for them. However, the parents of kids enjoy these activities as well. The park is situated in a beautiful setting and there is an equestrian park nearby that offers horseback riding and nature trails. This is a great place to spend a morning, afternoon, or the entire day.
