5 Reasons to Visit the French Riviera this Fall

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Searching online for the world’s famous hot spots will lead you to the French Riveria, also popularly known as Côte d’Azur (in French).

Inhabited since antiquity, the resort runs along the Mediterranean sea, mainly in Southeastern France, starting near the commune of Menton close to the Italian border and reaching the lower Alps. A number of scenic coastal cities and communes has made the French Riveria the heartthrob of many a tourist. Where else would you enjoy the delights of over 25 enthralling destinations including Nice, Monte-Carlo, Monaco, Antibes, Cannes, and Cassis.

With very little effort, the French Riviera will send the vibes of its irresistible charm to captivate your peripatetic soul. Adding to this is the historical value of the place covering the whole span of time from prehistoric to the 21st century. As the scorching summer segues into cooler airs, it is time to pack up for your next exciting vacation. Here are our five reasons to visit the French Riveria this Autumn.

1. Mild Climate

After a relatively hot and dry summer season under a bright sun, the Mediterranean winds bring a welcome relief to the area with cool temperatures prevailing in most parts of the French Riviera. Though it is characterized by several micro-climates, tourists are rarely bothered by frosty or disagreeable temperatures. In some parts, especially close to Marseille, the winter weather may be rather windy but there are no frustrating rains and no harsh snowfalls over any of the tourist attractions in the French Riviera. In autumn, the weather is adorably refreshing, encouraging free travel, boating, and outdoor sport. Tourists are, nevertheless, advised to take warm clothing with them if setting out for the place in fall or winter.

2. Saint-Paul de Vence’s Art and Culture

The historical and cultural heritage of Saint-Paul de Vence never ceases to amaze tourists. It is a modern village where people come to relax and revel in the riches of art and crafts, woodwork, jewelry, weaving, and more. For the gourmet traveler, Saint-Paul de Vence hosts a generous cuisine, rich in local flair and diverse in taste. Over a dozen accommodation restaurants offer hospitable and affordable dining and rooming services to international tourists. At Saint-Paul de Vence, you enjoy the comfort of your home amidst the pleasures of artistic wealth and cultural tourism.

3. Musée Picasso

The Picasso Museum (Musée Picasso) of Juan-Les-Pins, Antibes, has been reopened this summer for tourists who love art and history, particularly those who admire the creations of the legendary Spanish artist Picasso. The museum, whose building dates back to the 14th century, is home to 150 paintings of Picasso including the renowned La Joie de Vivre. Besides Picasso, the collection of art in the Picasso Museum of Antibes comes from such celebrated artists as Germaine Richier, Nicolas de Stael, and Anna-Eva Bergman, along with many others. In November, food and wine with traditional music will entertain your gourmet spirit. And in December, the Christmas Sailing Week will thrill your penchant for the sea beyond imagination.

4. City Museums in Nice

The beautiful city of Nice in the French Riviera is also known worldwide for its many city museums that allow visitors free entrance on the first and third Saturday of each month. The more famous of these museums include: Musée et site archéologiques de Cimiez, Musée d’Art moderne et d’Art contemporain, Musée des Arts Asiatiques, Musée International d’art naïf Anatole Jakovsky, and Musée des Beaux-Arts. Many of the treasures preserved in these museums provide a glimpse of the Greco-Roman civilizations dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Musée International d’art naïf Anatole Jakovsky has also been the focus of attention of the world’s leading admirers and critics of art. Your stay in Nice is likely to bring you many happy surprises encrypted in the wealth of historical items that adorn the shelves of city museums.

5. Nice – Cannes Marathon

This year, the French Riveria is hosting a new exciting sporting event, i.e. the Nice – Cannes Marathon. The event is scheduled for 9th of November with 10, 000 runners ready to participate in the race that will follow a coastal route of more than 42 km, starting from the well-known ‘Running Expo Marathon’ in Nice and finishing at Croisette before the famous ‘Palais des Festivals et des Congrés’ in Cannes. The organizers of the Marathon are offering ‘numerous surprises’ at the inaugural program – an occasion not to miss!

There is a lot more to enjoy in the exotic French Riviera this fall. Whether you are a first-time traveler or a seasoned tourist, this part of the world won’t fail to amuse, excite, and inspire you with its scenic charm, historical value, artistic wealth, and pleasant weather.
