The Rathaus Christmas market is the oldest and biggest in Vienna, but it is also probably the worst: overpriced, nearly always overcrowded and it sells mostly mass-produced junk at inflated prices. Exclusively for children and tourists!

Locals know to head to head to the nearby Spittelberg market for the best Punsch and a younger, more urban flair, Freyung for antiques and arts and crafts and Karlsplatz for truly one-of-a-kind, handmade (albeit rather expensive) jewelry and decorative items. And if you want a more old-fashioned and traditional Austrian experience go to the Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace.
