What and Where to Eat on the Italian Riviera

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

One of the most popular Mediterranean tourist destinations has always been, and most likely will continue to be the Italian Riviera.

Liguria as it is called is comprised of a wide array of beaches and resort towns, such as Portofino and Rapallo. Running north from the city of Genoa the border of France, most of the towns in the region afford you the ability to create a vacation agenda filled with entertainment and exciting one-day excursions. You will find that Genoa is the principle city of the region and the extensive railway system makes for quick and easy access to all important points of interest.

Without a doubt, the Italian Riviera is northern Italy’s most picturesque coastline dotted with numerous seaside caves and cliffs. Genoa is Italy’s busiest port, and holds the region’s busiest cultural attractions. This is especially true when it comes to the dining opportunities you will find here, which are unmatched anywhere else in Italy, and quite possibly all of Europe.

Well-known for its abundance of culinary delights and cuisine, Italy has attracted hungry tourists from all over the world to come and sample what the country is most recognized for – the fine dining and the wines. The list of restaurants along the Italian Riviera is quite lengthy. In fact, it is too lengthy to list in this short bit of prose composed here. So without further adieu, here is a list of the most popular restaurants in the region.

  • Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre (Vernazza)

This remote “hole in the wall” is easy to miss when you are visiting Vernazza, but the stiff walk uphill from the train station is well worth the endeavor. Run by two Sicilian brothers, the food (as well as the drink) are nothing short of delectable. The pasta is light and fluffy and the gorgonzola is unmatched in flavor.

This is a memorable dining experience that is always well worth the wait, so be sure to make your reservations well ahead of when you would like to be enjoying your meal. Take the recommendations of their excellent serving staff when it comes to your choice of food and drink. You won’t be disappointed.

The friendly serving staff doesn’t hover over you as you try to enjoy your meal (unlike other establishments in the area). They make sure you have everything you need and treat you like royalty. Always a favorite with the local guests, the owner/chef Duccio appears throughout the course of the evening to greet each and every one of his patrons whenever possible.

  • Trattoria da Maria (Genoa)

A uniquely incredible experience awaits you when you venture into this renowned restaurant of Genoa. For decades, they have been satiating the palates of locals and tourists alike. Be prepared for the singing waiters who willingly serenade you while enjoying some of the finest cuisine in Genoa.

Great presentation! Made me want to hop on a train and visit the area. Watch your spelling, though: without further ado, not adieu.
