Vegetarian Dining in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo is the largest city of Sri Lanka but more importantly, it is viewed as the commercial and financial capital of the country as well.  The city is well known as a popular tourist destination because of its numerous galleries and museums, but it is also a popular tourist area for its diverse dining venues which includes those that feature a Vegan-friendly and/or vegetarian menu.  For those of you who prefer the Vegan-friendly or vegetarian lifestyle, the following is a listing of the better dining venues in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Greenlands Hotel – known for its lacto and Vegan-friendly Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine, the restaurant features many South Indian vegetarian dishes as well as the standard Sri Lankan favorites.  The Vegan menu options include dosas, snacks, string hoppers, and much more.  It is situated inside a vegetarian hotel and features a small bar in the complex as well.  Be sure to bring cash as that is the only form of payment they will accept.

Mathura – one of the more popular vegetarian dining venues in Colombo, they also serve lacto and Vegan-friendly Indian cuisine.  They also have a decent take-out menu for those who don’t feel like dining in.  They serve South Indian dishes during lunchtime and for dinner, which starts at 7 pm, they serve a wide range of dishes including breads, curries, dosai, idli, poori, and rice.  They do not serve alcohol and will only accept cash for payment.

Shri Vihar – South Indian vegetarian dishes prepared for dining in or delivery.  There is an air conditioned dining room which usually fills up quickly so arrive early if you want to escape the heat.  Friday nights feature a full buffet.  If you are interested in home delivery, the times are from 11 am to 3 pm and 6 to 10:30 pm daily.

Sri Vani Vilas Hotel – Indian lacto and Vegan-friendly cuisine are the main menu features.  Their specialty is South Indian vegetarian dishes such as dosa, masala dosai, parotta, and vadai iddly chappathi.  The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 6:30 am until 10:30 pm.  Bring cash as that is all they accept.

Chutneys Cinnamon Grand – Vegan-friendly but they also serve dishes containing meat.  They do specialize in Indian cuisine both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and are located in the confines of the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.  The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and they do accept credit cards for payment.

And you don’t have to be a vegetarian to try the local vegan and vegetarian delights. With a host of vegetarian dining options available, a lunch or dinner of the local cuisine can be an interesting option for the whole family.
