Best Places for Cocktails in the Balearic Islands

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

One of the best things about a sunshine beach holiday is relaxing with a cocktail.  From the latest trendy concoction to old favourites like the pina colada, nothing says ‘vacation’ quite so much as a big, brightly coloured beverage – preferably with an umbrella in it!

The Balearic Islands are certainly not short of places for a fruity tipple, so here’s the lowdown on the best bars to celebrate cocktail hour Balearic style.

Ibiza’s party capital, San Antonio, has a few hidden gems nestled among the rather less impressive beer and football bars that unfortunately make up a lot of the choice here.  People is a relatively new offering in the heart of the West End, whose extensive cocktail menu has brought a fresh and funky feel to this sometimes rather seedy side of the island.

Another option is on the famous sunset strip, where well known bars like Café del Mar and Mambo offer a good choice of drinks – but be prepared for a fairly hefty bar tab.  One of the best kept secrets in San Antonio is Villa Mercedes, a fantastic restaurant by the harbour where you can enjoy an excellent cocktail under the fairy light canopies of the garden.

Ibiza Town itself offers a much wider choice of bars in a more cosmopolitan setting.  Head to the old town where there are a number of good venues tucked into the winding streets, or try the marina for a drink the yachting glitterati.

The best bet for a decent cocktail in Mallorca is in the trendy capital, Palma.  For a truly flamboyant experience, head to Abaco, situated in the courtyard of an old Palma house on Sant Joan.  Filled with caged birds, fountains, flowers and candles this is definitely not one to miss.

There are plenty of other choices in the La Llotja district and on the Passeig Maritim, or try Karkai in the up-and-coming suburb of Portixol, with its sea view and waterfront pavement tables.

Nightlife in Menorca’s capital, Mahon, centres around the waterfront area, that comes alive at night with many glittering reflections.  In the prime spot right below the city walls is Bar Akkelare, perhaps the trendiest venue in the town.  This stone cavern opens out into a stylish garden courtyard and opens late into the night.

On the western side of the island, Ciutadella offers a number of excellent venues.  The Jazzbah Club, Sa Barreta Bar Tasca and Sa Clau Jazz Club are some of the best.
