Milan, as the home of Italian fashion, is world renowned as an important stop for the globe-trotting glitterati. The nightclubs of the city are therefore used to hosting celebs, fahionistas and those who simply dream of being like them. There are, though, more dastardly pits of depravity for those who like their evening’s entertainment to be served with more edge.
Hollywood is certainly one of the most well known clubs in Milan, having exported their brand to most corners of the planet from their base at Corso Cormo 15. Face control is tight, the prices are high, but so are the chances of bumping into celebrities from the worlds of fashion, movies and pop music. Dress as glamorous as you dare and head on down, but have a back up plan in case you end up stuck on the wrong side of the velvet rope.
Devotees of electronic music and dancing are advised to go to Plastic, a club popular with locals and visitors alike. DJ sets regularly include the most famous names in dance music as well as up and coming Italian producers. Visitors travelling on a budget should try Sunday nights when entrance is free. The permissive atmosphere here is also very gay friendly while not being a dedicated gay club. Plastic is located at Viale Umbria 120 and is open all night at the weekends.
The more hedonistic visitors should go to Alcatraz, where live shows and DJ’s mix seamlessly in the huge, ex-industrial space. The type of music changes from night to night and room to room. In fact, the whole character of the club can morph from one cutting edge concept to the next; check on the website for events during your visit to Milan. Alcatraz is located at Via Valtellina 25 and has a more relaxed dress code than other clubs in the city.
Despite its obsession with the overused word ‘outrageous’, Shocking Club will raise a few eyebrows among more conservative club-goers. The theme nights are the most popular, when the otherwise chic décor gets lost in an explosion of gaudy (in a good way) decorations and the beautiful people flock from around the city to see and be seen. Find Shocking Club at Bastioni di Porta Nuova, 12 but do some research before setting off, apparently on non-theme nights Shocking Club is in fact quite dull.
