Top 3 Beach Resorts in China

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Choosing one of the best beach resorts in China might be a bit frustrating, considering they are all attractive and unique in their own right.

Macau Beach

Known primarily for the huge populations of Shanghai and Beijing, a lot of first-time visitors don’t realize the beauty and luxury you can experience by visiting some of China’s beach resorts.Though China sees millions of international travelers annually, three areas that deserve some attention based on the waterfront locales are Hainan, Macau, and Shenzhen. The following is a list of those that are the most recommended ones to visit if you plan a vacation to China.

1. Shenzhen

Located in the southern province of Guangdong Province, along the eastern shore of the Pearl River and neighboring the Delta as well as Hong Kong is the city of Shenzhen. Despite not having the historical significance as some of the other Chinese destinations, Shenzhen is a very modern, waterfront city becoming well known for its rapidly growing tourist economy. Because there is such a mix of Chinese cultures that have moved to the Guangdong Province, visitors can sample foods from each the famous eight cuisines of China.

2. Macau

Oftentimes called “The City with Two Faces”, Macau is also the self-proclaimed Las Vegas of the East as the once sleeping little city is now a metropolis of nearly half a million people. Commerce and tourism are the primary reasons that Macau is thriving economically and the casinos have taken gambling to a new extreme. Despite the abundance of “mega-casinos” in the city, Macau’s pleasures are architectural and atmospheric, yet laidback and relaxed.

3. Hainan

Of particular beauty are the tropical beaches located at Dadonghai and Tianya Haijiao. Beautiful sunshine, coconut plantations, and soft sands make these two ocean destinations well worth the trip. The Hairui Tomb where the Ming Dynasty’s compassionate and popular officer Hairui is buried holds historical significance for the locals and is another popular destination in addition to the beach communities above. Another point of interest is the Wugong Temple (Fiver Officials’ Temple) in Haikou.

I have been traveling to Sanya’s resorts for more than 10 years now. I saw it developing and getting crowded. Still many are among the most beautiful beach resorts in the world.
When it became popular among Russians to go to Hainan, it got a bit different than before. But still there are the typical nice Southern Chinese places full of beauty and romantic subtropical beach and gardens.
However, as all over China, the hotels, their management and their reputation change fast. So always take an update look whether your resorts is still whatit was e.g. 2 years ago. Many find now the RitzCarlton “the best”. I disagree. It is like a stone castle, lacking the light and subtropical style which is so typical for Hainan. For many years I visited thebSheraton which held the reputation of being the very best with its garden and beach. But it seems to have passed the peak, ough still an excellent location.
In 2000 I came to Shanhaitien, of which I do not know whether it still exists. Back then a stunning place and beach. But that beach is now part og the town. It was before the big hype. However, Shanhaitien was where Beijing top politicians relaxed, and it was a dawn of what was ahead.
Hainan and in particular Sanya: Great place. I will always return.
