Hunting down celebrities in London is not solely the preserve of the paparazzi. Pick up any trashy magazine and you will see them all over the place: hanging around Camden Market looking cool and edgy, ordering salads in expensive restaurants, spilling drunkenly out of nightclubs – it’s almost as if they WANT to be seen!
But where are the best places to spot that most elusive of creatures, the celebrity? Arm yourself with this guide and get your celebrity stalk on.
Bars and restaurants
There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a stick thin supermodel pushing lettuce leaves around her plate while looking hungry, or a Z-list reality TV star desperately trying the ‘don’t you know who I am’ line on an unimpressed nightclub bouncer.
London has several well-known celebrity hang-outs where you might just catch a glimpse of your favourite star. The Ivy is perhaps the most illustrious, having played host to all the big names, including George Michael, Elton John, Tom Cruise and, of course, that grinding celebrity PR machine, the Beckhams.
Getting a table at the Ivy however, is nigh on impossible, so you may be better off trying your luck at sushi restaurant, Nobu, which has welcomed the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Kate Moss, to name but a few.
If you’re looking for the fame-hungry soap actor, footballer or glamour model variety of celeb, head to Chinawhites – although bear in mind that you will need an accompanying friend who has been invited to become a member, or be willing to part with the £650 fee to become one.
It takes a lot of cash and a serious shopping addiction to become a real bona fide celebrity, so where better to spot them than in London’s central shopping districts? Head to that London institution, Harrods and see who you can find. Or try Selfridges on Regent Street, anywhere on New Bond Street and the King’s Road – all of which are filled to bursting with the rich and famous.
Carnaby Street, Covent Garden and the Camden area are also regular haunts of the trendy London celeb, such as Kate Moss, Noel Fielding, Lilly Allen and Pete Docherty.
OK, so your chances of actually getting into one of these are fairly slim but you can still fight your way into a prime spot by the red carpet and ogle the celeb du jour. In London, most of the premieres take place around Leicester Square and are a great place to see all the big Hollywood names, as well as the plethora of wannabes clawing their way up the celebrity ranks.
West End Theatre
If all else fails you can always pay to go and see a celeb in the flesh. London’s West End theatre scene is among the world’s most respected and its reputation draws some big deal names from across the world. Actors including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Spacey, Christian Slater and Liam Neeson have all taken to the stage here in recent years. And if you can’t afford to buy a ticket, you can always loiter around the stage doors!
